Both U19 Thailand and U19 Malaysia beating U19 Singapore by relatively narrow scores has significantly improved U19 Vietnam’s chances of advancing to the semifinals.
After two matchdays in Group B of the ASEAN U19 Championship, the competition for the next-round tickets is becoming clearer. Notably, the outcomes of the matches have not only affected Thailand and Malaysia but have also unexpectedly given a major advantage to Vietnam.
In the latest round, U19 Thailand easily defeated U19 Singapore 4-0, while U19 Malaysia also beat the same opponent 3-0. These victories keep both teams in the race for the top spot, but importantly, neither side won by an excessively large margin.
This is seen as very positive news for U19 Vietnam. If they cannot secure the top position in their own group, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s squad still has a chance to compete for the best second-place spot among all groups to reach the semifinals.
Since U19 Singapore only lost by margins of 3 and 4 goals respectively, it is difficult for the second-place team in Group B to build a significantly better goal difference compared to other groups. This means U19 Vietnam will have more advantages if they end up in a tie-breaking scenario.
Many fans had feared that Group B might see “destructive” blowout victories, giving the second-place team an overwhelming goal difference. However, what has happened after two matchdays is turning out to be entirely favorable for Coach Ikeuchi’s team.
Nevertheless, this opportunity will only become reality if U19 Vietnam completes its own task well in the final match. A victory, or at least a sufficiently good result to maintain a positive goal difference, will give the squad led by the Japanese coach a huge advantage before waiting for results from other groups.
In short, U19 Thailand and U19 Malaysia have inadvertently handed U19 Vietnam a “big gift” in the race to the semifinals. Now, what fans are waiting for is the Vietnamese young players to seize that advantage and aim for the ASEAN U19 title.
