Thailand U19's head coach acknowledged that his squad faced heavy stress despite overcoming Malaysia U19 to book their place in the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN U19 tournament.
Thailand U19 have secured their berth in the semifinals of the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship. after a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Malaysia U19 in the final Group B match. This outcome not only helped the Land of Golden Temples side retain the top spot in the group but also eliminated Malaysia U19, thereby creating a bigger opportunity for Vietnam U19 in the race for a knockout stage ticket.
After the game, head coach Chakraphan Panpi expressed satisfaction with his players for achieving the set goals. The Thailand U19 manager believed that the pressure to win had a significant impact on the team's performance. He stated: “First of all, I must commend the players for securing the three points together and fulfilling the objective of reaching the semifinals. In this match, perhaps they put too much pressure on themselves. The very need to win caused the team to fail to display their true form.”
Despite the favorable result, coach Chakraphan Panpi acknowledged that Thailand U19 still have many areas to improve. According to him, the young players sometimes failed to maintain consistency in their tactical execution, especially during moments of high pressure. The tactician stressed: “We still need to develop further in our playing system because the players are still making mistakes. Pressure is partly why the team hasn’t played to its full potential. I want them to concentrate on their own game rather than paying too much attention to the opponents or the referee. If they carry out the tactics correctly, I believe the outcome will be positive.”
On the field, Malaysia U19 started with strong determination and took an early lead through Imran in the 14th minute. However, Thailand U19 quickly replied with two successive goals to go ahead 2-1. Before the first half ended, Arsyad leveled the match with a fine strike for Malaysia. In the second half, captain Kongsri became the hero by successfully converting a penalty in the 80th minute, sealing a 3-2 win for the Land of Golden Temples.
This defeat caused Malaysia U19 to miss out on the semifinals in disappointment. The Malaysian youth team trailed Vietnam U19 by exactly one goal in goal difference in the competition for the best runner-up spot. Meanwhile, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s side still had to wait for the result of the match between Australia U19 and Cambodia U19 to determine their chances of progressing.
Looking ahead to the semifinal round, coach Chakraphan Panpi said that Thailand U19 will not stop at their current achievement. He declared: “We don’t know yet who we will face in the next match, but the whole team will continue to work hard to refine our playing system. The first goal was to reach the semifinals, and the next goal is to secure a spot in the final”. With what they have shown, Thailand U19 continues to display great ambition in their journey to conquer the Southeast Asian throne.
