Thai media react to their team potentially facing U19 Vietnam in the semifinals

Thai media contend that the win against Malaysia did more than just book their semifinal ticket—it also gave them a considerable edge in the title race.

The thrilling 3-2 victory over U19 Malaysia in the final Group B match has sparked widespread discussion in Thai media. Not only did it help the young Thai team finish top of their group and secure a semifinal berth at the 2026 ASEAN U19 Championship, but this result is also seen as granting a major advantage to Coach Chakraphan Panpi’s squad heading into the knockout stage.

Before the match, U19 Thailand faced little pressure to win; a draw would have been enough to keep them atop Group B. Nevertheless, the team played with determination until the final moments and secured victory through an 80th-minute penalty.

Right after the match, Thai media began analyzing the impact of this win on the overall tournament landscape. According to them, beating Malaysia not only eliminated a rival but also significantly altered the potential scenarios for the semifinals.

Under the tournament format, the top team of Group B faces the best second-place team. Had Malaysia remained in contention, U19 Thailand could have found themselves up against top title contenders like U19 Indonesia or U19 Australia.

However, the loss to Thailand officially eliminated Malaysia from the race. This nearly narrowed the competition for the best runner-up spot to just U19 Vietnam and U19 Cambodia.

Thai media believe the win over Malaysia gives their team a clearer path to the final

Thai media assess this as a favorable scenario for their side. If U19 Australia defeats Cambodia in the final Group C match, U19 Vietnam will secure a semifinal spot and become Thailand’s opponent. In case Cambodia spring a surprise, the Angkor representatives will advance instead.

Whether it’s Vietnam or Cambodia,Thai experts consider both to be “easier” opponents compared to Indonesia or Australia at this stage.

This assessment comes because U19 Indonesia are displaying exceptional form on home soil. The young Indonesian team just defeated U19 Vietnam to top Group A and are viewed as strong title contenders. Meanwhile, U19 Australia possess superior physicality and squad quality, widely regarded as among the strongest in the tournament.

If results go as expected, Indonesia and Australia will likely meet in the semifinals. Many experts have dubbed this a “final before the final,” as both are top candidates for the championship.

On the other hand, U19 Thailand have a chance to enter the semifinals against a “softer” opponent. This means the door to the final is opening wider for the Thai team.

Nevertheless, Thai media also emphasize that there is no evidence suggesting their team deliberately calculated to choose an opponent. U19 Thailand played fairly and deserved their victory over Malaysia. However, from a results perspective, this win clearly provides a significant boost to their championship journey.

Therefore, if U19 Thailand go deep and reach the final, the victory over Malaysia may be remembered as the most crucial turning point—the moment that completely changed the tournament’s landscape.
