U19 Vietnam had to exit the U19 Southeast Asian Championship in heartbreaking circumstances as U19 Cambodia stunned U19 Australia in the last round of group matches on the night of June 9.
Before kickoff, the chances of coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s team advancing were considered very bright. Thailand’s 3-2 victory over Malaysia in Group B gave U19 Vietnam an edge in the race for the best runner-up spot to reach the semifinals. All they needed was for Cambodia not to take any points off Australia, and the red-shirted team would secure a place in the top four.
Things unfolded even more favorably than expected as Australia started strongly. In the 2nd minute, Marcus Neill capitalized on a defensive error by Cambodia to open the scoring. By the 17th minute, Alexandro Nunes doubled the lead after a sharp attacking combination. With a 2-0 advantage after less than 20 minutes, Australia made Vietnamese fans believe the semifinal ticket was within reach.

However, an unbelievable scenario unfolded in the second half. After being completely outplayed early on, Cambodia suddenly mounted a strong comeback. In the 59th minute, Sreng Sokea unleashed a shot that deflected off an Australian defender before finding the net, reducing the deficit to 1-2.
This goal boosted the confidence of the Cambodian side. Meanwhile, Australia’s performance waned, and they missed several chances to increase their lead. In the 81st minute, from a corner kick, defender Lewis Marinucci accidentally scored an own goal, allowing Cambodia to equalize at 2-2, leaving everyone stunned.
