BREAKING: FIFA allows European-level overseas Vietnamese to play for Vietnam national team

The Vietnam national team has just gotten a major boost from FIFA, with one of the trickiest citizenship cases now cleared, paving the way for a significant squad enhancement before the AFF Cup 2026.

Last month, the fact that CA TP.HCM Club added two overseas Vietnamese players, Lê Giang Patrik and Ngô Đăng Khoa, who completed their Vietnamese citizenship procedures, drew great attention from fans. This is seen as a crucial turning point for both players in their long-term journey with Vietnamese football at both club and national team levels.

However, the joy back then was not yet complete. While Ngô Đăng Khoa faced almost no obstacles if called up to the Vietnam national team, Lê Giang Patrik’s case was significantly more complicated because he had previously played for the Slovakia U21 team in the European U21 Championship. After negotiations among the parties, FIFA made a key decision that opened a new opportunity for this goalkeeper.

Having obtained Vietnamese nationality, Lê Giang Patrik is now officially allowed to play for the Vietnam national team with FIFA's approval.

According to a source from Thanh Niên, after receiving a proposal from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), FIFA reviewed the documents and agreed to let Lê Giang Patrik wear the Vietnam national team jersey. This news holds special significance for the player born in 1992, and also brings great joy to coach Kim Sang-sik, as the AFF Cup 2026 is only about a month away.

The arrival of Lê Giang Patrik gives the Vietnam national team an additional quality option in goal. The goalkeeper, currently under contract with CA TP.HCM Club, is highly rated for his playing experience and his desire to contribute to his father's homeland. More importantly, he adds significant depth to a unit that already boasts several goalkeepers with ideal physiques.

If called up, Lê Giang Patrik will join Đặng Văn Lâm (1.89 m), Nguyễn Filip (1.92 m), and Trần Trung Kiên (1.91 m) to form a formidable quartet of goalkeepers, among the most competitive in the region. This is a crucial foundation for coach Kim Sang-sik to build a solid defensive system in the campaign to defend Southeast Asia's crown.

Beyond strengthening the goalkeeper position, the Vietnam national team also boasts many defenders with standout physiques, such as Đoàn Văn Hậu (1.86 m), Bùi Hoàng Việt Anh (1.84 m), Nguyễn Thành Chung, and Đỗ Duy Mạnh (1.81 m). The combination of these goalkeepers and the tall defensive line is expected to create one of the strongest defenses in the history of the Vietnam national team.

For Lê Giang Patrik personally, the decision from FIFA is perhaps a well-deserved reward after years of waiting. Ever since he chose to return to Vietnam to test his abilities, he has always harbored the hope of representing his father's homeland on the international stage. Now, that dream has become a reality, and it also opens up further expectations for the Vietnam national team ahead of the AFF Cup 2026.
