Thailand's U23 team disappointed by heavily losing to a team that was previously defeated by Vietnam's U23.

Even though they played at home and scored first, Thailand's U23 side let UAE's U23 stage a comeback to thrash them 5-2, a loss that worries the Land of Smiles' supporters with the 2026 Asian Games approaching.

Thailand's U23 have just endured one of their most forgettable defeats of 2026, losing 5-2 at home to UAE's U23 in a friendly match.

What makes this result even more notable is that UAE's U23 are the same team that was eliminated by Vietnam's U23 in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Asian U23 Championship back in January. At that time, Kim Sang-sik's squad brilliantly defeated the West Asian side 3-2 after a thrilling 120 minutes to secure a semifinal berth. That victory earned praise from Thai media and fans alike. Siam Sport once hailed Vietnam's U23 as having "the heart of a lion" after their courageous performance against UAE.

Returning to the latest match, Thailand's U23 started dreamily as Thanakrit Chotmuangpak scored the opener in the 2nd minute. The early goal gave the hosts confidence and created a feeling they would have a smooth game against the West Asian opponent.

However, what followed was completely the opposite. Thailand's U23 defense made repeated mistakes, allowing UAE to equalize in the 12th minute before completing the comeback with a goal to make it 2-1 in the 42nd minute.

If the first half was just a warning sign, the second half truly became a nightmare for the "War Elephants". The hosts' defensive system almost completely collapsed against the opponent's sharp counterattacks. Between the 54th and 75th minutes, UAE's U23 scored three consecutive goals to extend the lead to 5-1, quickly making the atmosphere in the stands heavy.

Late efforts only earned Thailand's U23 a consolation goal in the 86th minute, finally accepting a 2-5 defeat.

On Thai football forums, many fans expressed disappointment with their team's performance. Numerous opinions pointed out that Thailand's U23 defense is revealing too many problems with only a few months left before the 2026 Asian Games. Earlier, after seeing Vietnam's U23 defeat UAE in the Asian U23 Championship finals, many Thai fans admitted that the Vietnamese side is currently the number one team in Southeast Asia at the U23 level.

With this heavy defeat, Thailand's U23 clearly still have a lot of work to do if they want to compete for results at the 2026 Asian Games. The loss to UAE is not just a friendly result, but also a wake-up call about the defensive gaps and the lack of stability in the play of the Land of Smiles' team.
