Cambodia's national team maintains its remarkable performance with a 2-0 victory over Hong Kong in a friendly, thus prolonging its winning run and gearing up to be a "surprise contender" at the 2026 AFF Cup.
The Cambodian squad is showing a significant transformation under Japanese head coach Koji Gyotoku, as it continues to sustain an impressive performance during the June FIFA Days friendly series.Following a 4-0 win against Bhutan, the Angkor-based team stunned once more by defeating Hong Kong (China) at home in Phnom Penh.
Before the match, both teams were considered fairly balanced, given their similar FIFA rankings. However, Cambodia made a clear difference through proactive play, high speed, and effective high pressing. Despite controlling only 47% of possession, the hosts completely dominated in terms of chances created.
According to statistics, Cambodia took 13 shots, with 8 on target, vastly outdoing Hong Kong, which managed only 3 off-target attempts. The home team maintained constant pressure throughout the first half, forcing their opponents to pack the defense and struggle to cope.
The turning point came in the 45+1 minute, when naturalized player Yudai Ogawa capitalized on a situation to open the scoring for Cambodia. The goal just before halftime gave the hosts a huge boost of morale as they entered the second half.
Just five minutes into the second half, Cambodia punished another defensive error from the opposition. Chanthea Sieng finished accurately to make it 2-0, effectively sealing the game as Hong Kong struggled helplessly.
Throughout the remainder of the match, Cambodia deliberately reduced the tempo but still maintained full control. Hong Kong could not mount any significant pressure and ultimately accepted a 0-2 defeat. With two consecutive wins in June, Cambodia is sending a powerful message that they are ready to become a "dark horse" at the 2026 AFF Cup, and even capable of troubling major opponents like Vietnam or Indonesia.
