OFFICIAL: AFC issues a decisive ruling concerning Vietnam's strongest football club

The latest decision from the AFC has officially confirmed that Hanoi Police FC must journey to Australia to vie for a place in the group stage of the 2026-2027 AFC Champions League Elite. What factors have placed the Vietnamese side in an unfavorable position?

Hanoi Police FC will face a formidable challenge on their quest for the 2026-2027 AFC Champions League Elite, as they are set to play as visitors against Adelaide United in the playoff round. According to the latest announcement from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the match between the two teams will take place on August 11 at the home ground of the Australian representative.

Playing away from home is regarded as a significant disadvantage for the police-backed club. Under AFC regulations, the club from the national league with a higher seeding ranking earns the right to host the preliminary round match. The A-League currently ranks fifth in the regional rankings, while the V-League sits in seventh place. This factor has granted Adelaide United the privilege of hosting the decisive match for a spot in the group stage. This clash is also expected to have a direct impact on CAHN's goal of conquering Asia's premier club competition.

Despite having to play on foreign soil, Hanoi Police FC still has reasons for confidence, given their quality squad and increasingly improved international experience. However, their upcoming opponent is a traditionally strong club with an impressive record both in Australia and on the Asian stage.

Founded in 2003, Adelaide United is regarded as one of the top clubs in Australian football. The team has won the national championship twice and finished as runners-up three times, including a second-place finish in the most recent season. This consistent performance has helped Adelaide United maintain a formidable reputation in the A-League over the years.

Not only successful domestically, Adelaide United has also made its mark on the international stage. The Australian representative was once the runner-up in the AFC Champions League Elite and reached the top four of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008. These achievements demonstrate that Quang Hai, Dinh Bac, and their teammates will have to overcome an opponent with considerable experience if they wish to realize their dream of appearing in the AFC Champions League Elite group stage.

However, the opportunity to compete on the continental stage is not completely lost for the Vietnamese representative if they fail to beat Adelaide United. According to the AFC format, the losing team in the AFC Champions League Elite playoff will be transferred to the group stage of the AFC Champions League Two. If this scenario occurs, Hanoi Police FC will join The Cong - Viettel, the V-League runner-up, as the Vietnamese football representatives competing in the second-tier continental tournament.
