The first goal of the 2026 World Cup was scored! It was created by the Saudi Pro League's top scorer, marking the fastest goal in the last five editions.

The 2026 World Cup opener saw Mexico, the first of the three host nations to play, take on South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Just under nine minutes into the game, a poor South African pass from the back was stolen. Mexican number 16 Quiñones collected the ball, drove into the box, and fired home to net the competition's first goal.

This goal also became the fastest in the opening matches of the last five World Cups since Philipp Lahm scored in the 6th minute for Germany against Costa Rica in the 2006 tournament.

The 29-year-old striker, who plays for Saudi club Al-Qadsiah, is also this season's Saudi Pro League top scorer. He netted 33 goals in 31 club appearances, edging out England international Ivan Toney (32 goals) and Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo (28 goals) to win the league's golden boot. Among his 33 goals, only two were penalties, whereas Toney's 32 included 10 penalties and Ronaldo's 28 had 6.
