The Quang Hai puzzle could determine ASEAN Cup ambitions.

In Kim Sang-sik's 3-4-2-1 setup, Quang Hai might serve as the midfield distributor behind the front three comprising Xuan Son, Hoang Hen, and Khoa Ngo.

The Vietnam national team enters the 2026 ASEAN Cup preparation with an intriguing problem: where will coach Kim Sang-sik position Quang Hai when the front line features a trio of Xuan Son, Hoang Hen, and Khoa Ngo in the 3-4-2-1 formation?

The most logical answer is not to push Quang Hai too high, but to drop him a step, turning the Hanoi Police FC midfielder into a "distribution hub" in midfield. In the 3-4-2-1 structure, Xuan Son is almost automatically the central striker, occupying the opponent's center-backs, holding up play, and attacking crosses. Hoang Hen, as coach Kim Sang-sik himself has experimented, is suited to the role of right winger or right-sided attacking midfielder, where he can both cut inside to combine and break down the flank to deliver crosses for Xuan Son.

Khoa Ngo, if used in the attacking trio,, could take charge of the left flank or a left-sided playmaker role, bringing speed, pressing ability, and runs that stretch the defense. In that case, Quang Hai does not need to squeeze into an area already crowded with creative personnel. He should play as a right-sided number 8 in a central midfield pair, alongside a player with better tackling and covering ability.

This is how coach Kim Sang-sik can maximize Quang Hai's left foot. From a deeper position, Quang Hai can receive the ball behind the first pressing line, turn to spread play to the wing-back, slip passes into the gap between the opponent's center-back and full-back, or switch the play to the opposite flank for Khoa Ngo. When Hoang Hen tucks into the right half-space, Quang Hai will have a close partner to combine with, forming a triangle (in yellow) with the right wing-back and the right-sided center-back.

The key lies in defensive balance. If Quang Hai plays too high alongside Hoang Hen and Khoa Ngo, Vietnam could be short-handed in the midfield zone when losing possession. But if he drops deeper, the team can transition into a 5-4-1 defensive shape: the two wing-backs drop back, Hoang Hen and Khoa Ngo narrow into two wide midfielders, while Quang Hai stays in the central midfield pair to regulate the pressing tempo.

Coach Kim Sang-sik previously praised the Xuan Son - Hoang Hen partnership as "perfect" after the win over Malaysia, while emphasizing that Hoang Hen creates many attacking options when playing on the right. That shows the Korean coach already has a formula up front. The remaining task is to find someone to control the tempo behind that formula, and Quang Hai is the most logical choice.

In the 3-4-2-1, Quang Hai does not necessarily have to be the one to finish every attack. His optimal role is that of a key unlocker before the decisive moment: controlling the tempo, switching direction, playing through balls, and delivering the ball to the feet of Xuan Son, Hoang Hen, or Khoa Ngo. If this puzzle is solved, Vietnam could boast an attack that is both physically strong, creatively rich, and harder to read than before.
