After two matches in Group K, the DRC has one point from a 1-1 draw with Portugal and a 0-1 loss to Colombia, conceding in the final minutes. If they beat Uzbekistan on Atlanta's field, the African representative will have four points and a strong chance to advance to the round of 32.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan faces a very tough task. The Central Asian team has lost both of its first two matches against Colombia and Portugal, conceding eight goals and earning no points. To keep hope alive as one of the best third-placed teams, Uzbekistan must win by a large margin against the DRC.

The DRC's presence at the 2026 World Cup is already considered a major achievement. This team did not qualify directly from the African zone but had to go through a challenging series of playoff matches. The African representative defeated Cameroon and Nigeria in the regional playoffs before overcoming Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff last March to earn a spot at the world's biggest football festival.

This is only the second time the DRC has participated in the World Cup. The first was in 1974, when the country was still known as Zaire. In that tournament, Zaire lost all three matches, failed to score a goal, and conceded 14 times. That performance made the team a topic of international media discussion for years.

Kabulo Mwana Kabulo, a veteran sports journalist and former Minister of Sports of the DRC, stated that returning to the World Cup after 52 years is already a great success for the nation's football. According to him, the opportunity to erase the unpleasant memories of the 1974 World Cup holds special significance, and if they advance past the group stage, it would be a memorable milestone in the country's football history.

On Uzbekistan's side, their immediate goal is to earn their first points in World Cup history. Coach Fabio Cannavaro said he wants his players to be more confident, to hold the ball boldly, and to showcase their abilities rather than feel pressured by the world's biggest stage. The former Italy World Cup winner from 2006 believes that the experiences from this tournament will help Uzbek football grow stronger in the future, regardless of the final outcome.

The match between the DRC and Uzbekistan, therefore, is not only about deciding which team advances but also carries historical significance for both sides in their journey to establish themselves on the world football stage.
