Indonesian media: Vietnam national team possesses a new 'weapon'

According to Indonesian media, Vietnam’s preparation for the 2026 ASEAN Cup is drawing significant attention, and they caution that John Herdman's players must be especially mindful of the threat posed by Kim Sang Sik's side from dead-ball scenarios.

Bola.net states that the Vietnam national team is one of the leading contenders for the 2026 ASEAN Cup title. In the group stage, Vietnam is placed in Group A alongside Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste.

According to Bola.net, under coach Kim Sang Sik, set pieces have become one of the most dangerous attacking weapons for the Vietnamese team. The addition of several new players in the latest training camp is expected to boost their strength in free kicks and aerial duels ahead of the tournament.

Indonesian media notes that Vietnam boasts many players capable of delivering quality set pieces, such as Nguyen Quang Hai, Hoang Duc, Khuat Van Khang, and Hoang Hen. Moreover, the return of Phan Tuan Tai and Nguyen Dinh Bac brings more crossing alternatives and combination plays from the flanks.

Not only do they have numerous free-kick takers, but Vietnam is also highly rated for its aerial prowess. Bola.net believes coach Kim Sang Sik possesses several players who can make a difference in high balls, including Xuan Son, Nguyen Tai Loc, Gia Hung, Nguyen Thanh Chung, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Doan Van Hau, and Do Duy Manh.

In particular, young central defender Quang Kiet, standing at 1.95 m, is seen as a promising asset in aerial duels.

Bola.net concludes that Vietnam's corner kicks, free kicks, and aerial balls will be a key area Indonesia must prepare thoroughly if they want to avoid a disadvantage in their group-stage clash at the 2026 ASEAN Cup.
