The 2026 ASEAN Cup is not only a journey to defend the championship for the Vietnam national team but could also become a historic milestone for Do Duy Manh and Nguyen Quang Hai.

In the current squad assembled by coach Kim Sang Sik, Duy Manh and Quang Hai are the only two players who have won both the AFF Cup 2018 and the ASEAN Cup 2024 with Vietnam.

If they continue to help the team claim the top spot in this year's tournament, the duo will become the first Vietnamese players to own three Southeast Asian championships.

Not only do Duy Manh and Quang Hai have a chance to set a record for most titles, but they could also equal the milestone of five ASEAN Cup appearances if they make the final roster.

Previously, only four Vietnamese players had reached this milestone: Le Huynh Duc, Nguyen Minh Phuong, Nguyen Van Quyet, and Que Ngoc Hai. The all-time record for appearances still belongs to legend Le Cong Vinh with six ASEAN Cups from 2004 to 2016.

Vietnam is currently regarded as one of the top contenders for the ASEAN Cup 2026. With many rivals such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand not fielding their strongest squads, the chances for coach Kim Sang Sik's side to retain the title while helping Duy Manh and Quang Hai enter Vietnamese football history are very high.

Becamex TP.HCM signs contract with Spanish coach

Spanish coach Gerard Albadalejo will take charge of Becamex TP.HCM in the 2026/27 National First Division.

Coach Albadalejo has reached an agreement with Becamex TP.HCM, becoming the first Spanish tactician in the club's history. Previously, the club had employed coaches from South Korea, Portugal, Japan, and Vietnam.

The 1983-born manager will soon return to Vietnam to begin work when the team assembles in early July.

Gerard Albadalejo previously led Ninh Binh at the start of the 2025/26 V-League season, helping the team perform impressively and top the standings. However, after three consecutive losses, he was released after matchday 14.

Becamex TP.HCM's goal is to earn promotion to the V-League in the 2026/27 season.

Vietnam national team changes training schedule

Coach Kim Sang Sik has decided to adjust the training schedule of the Vietnam national team to better suit the players' physical condition after the season.

Instead of the usual 17:00 session, the team switched to training at 10:00 AM on June 27. The afternoon session on the same day and June 28 are rest days for recovery.

According to the plan, the Vietnam national team will continue training in Hanoi until July 1 before departing for a training camp in South Korea from July 2 to 14.

The coaching staff is adjusting the training load to match the physical foundation of the players after the just-concluded season.

Young center-back Nhat Minh said that although some players are still recovering from injuries, it does not significantly affect the quality of training sessions because the team has a fairly deep squad to fully implement all training plans.

"My goal is to train hard to earn a place on the squad for the tournament. As for other goals, I will continue to strive in the coming time," Nhat Minh shared.
