Tragic! Iran finished 9th in the standings and missed advancement, falling just 2 minutes short of progressing. Their seven World Cup appearances still cannot break the curse.

On June 28 Beijing time, the World Cup group stage ended. In a decisive Group J match, Austria played a 3-3 draw with Algeria. This outcome directly caused Asian side Iran to miss out on the knockout rounds of this World Cup.

In yesterday's Group G finale, Iran missed a vital penalty and had a potential match-winning goal ruled out, drawing 1-1 with Egypt. After finishing third in their group with three draws and no wins, their hopes of advancing rested on results from other groups.

A day later, no miracle came. Iran needed just one of three scenarios from Groups J, K, and L to come true to make history and advance. But all three groups produced unfavorable outcomes: Croatia beat Ghana 2-1, Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1, and Austria drew 3-3 with Algeria.

In that match, Algeria briefly led 3-2 in stoppage time, which would have helped Iran progress. However, just two minutes later, Karamatic scored a last-gasp equalizer for Austria, crushing Iran's hopes. In those two minutes, Iran went from heaven to hell.

As a result, Iran ended up ranked 9th among the 12 best third-placed teams, sadly missing out on advancement. Along with South Korea, Scotland, and Uruguay, Iran became one of the four third-placed teams eliminated from this World Cup.

It is a bitter fact that since their first World Cup appearance in 1978, Iran have never managed to advance from the group stage in seven tournaments.

In this edition, despite facing numerous difficulties from host nation USA, Iran remained unbeaten in three matches. But without a single win, they ultimately failed to bring comfort to their people back home.
