Manchester United's seven-game unbeaten run ended with a 1-0 defeat at the City Stadium to Nottingham Forest and remain in 13th place in the table, with 13 league defeats to the table, just one less than last season. Ruben Amorim can turn his attention to next week's Europa League with the only hope of changing the outcome of the season.
Nottingham Forest are 10 places ahead of Manchester United, beating their opponents twice for the first time since 1991/92, with fans chanting "You Are Not Famous Anymore" immediately after kick-off. If you just look at the stats, you will think that this is a "system game", because the Red Devils have nearly 70% possession and 24 shots on goal.
But that's exactly what Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Santo wants to see, because despite Chris Wood's injury, there are other weapons in the squad that United are familiar with: Antony ....... Elanga! It only took five minutes for the Swedish Swift to give his old team-mate a taste of his strengths.
Forest's goal came from a United cross that was headed wide to the edge of the box, followed by show time for Elanga, who ran long distances and dribbled over 85 metres in nine seconds, before taking advantage of team-mate Morgan Gibbs-White's running edge to smash a low left-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner.
Nottingham Forest led Manchester United 1-0 and although the goal was spectacular, Elanga did not celebrate, instead of making a painful face. However, it was Manchester United who were really painful, with Ten Hag selling him for just £15 million, a fast, well-balanced all-round player who is now worth more than £40 million comfortably.
In this regard, Amorim certainly cannot publicly criticize the club's past decisions. 'We're talking about a lot of Manchester United's strikers who are doing a good job but they have chances here and you don't have time at Manchester United. Amorim insisted, "I won't have time either, we have to solve the problem as soon as possible." It's not like these players haven't played at Manchester United, they've played, but sometimes there's too much pressure here, sometimes you don't have time, you should give these kids plenty of time to develop. But to do that, you need a strong foundation to support all these children, and without a strong foundation, we can't help our children. They have chances, sometimes football is like that, and it's really stressful to play for Manchester United."
Among the Manchester United players who tried to pursue Elanga were Garnacho, Patrick Dolgu and Mazraoui, but they were all helpless. As well as his speed, Elanga is also the most balanced winger in the Premier League, scoring long-range shots with his weak left foot.
It was something that United's forwards and most players were unable to do, with the stats showing that the Reds had 24 shots on goal and only six on target. Another statistic suggests that Nottingham Forest have kept the most clean sheets in the league and Elanga's goal in the fifth minute was enough to win the game.
United failed to score in their 11th game of the season and the efficiency of most of the midfield was unflattering. Garnacho, Mason Mount and others all had what appeared to be a 'off the post' to threaten shots, however, shots that didn't hit the back of the net couldn't help no matter how close they were.
Amorim started Garnacho and Zirkze, with the Dutchman playing as a no.9, with no prospect of scoring. In the midfield changes, United brought on Hojlund, but the biggest threat was the defender! Diogu Darlow hit the crossbar with a first-half header and came close to equalising.
In stoppage time, centre-back Harry Maguire, who had returned from injury, had a shot past Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Zeles, but was cleared by Murillo on the goal line. The £80 million centre-back, who came on in the 88th minute, made a cameo appearance as a centre-forward, creating a more effective threat than the two strikers who spent more than £100 million. Amorim should have brought him on as a centre-forward sooner rather than Hojlund and Zirkze.
Amorim defended: "In the final moments of the game, the opposition only had to protect the penalty area, you look at the Nottingham centre-backs, they played very comfortably because there were six men in a row! We can go into the third but we have to get the ball into the box and it's hard for you to get in. Harry Maguire is probably the best player in the squad when attacking from set-pieces, and when it comes to the penalty area, defenders and strikers can score goals as long as they are good. I don't think Maguire is a threat and Hojlund and Zirkze are not. It sometimes happens even with teams with the best strikers in the world, and in the box the defenders are sometimes the best attackers, and Maguire is good at that.'
The United boss admits his team's lack of efficiency in front of goal: "We created some chances but we should have used possession to create more. We've been in the final third a lot of times but the players need to do better because goals are really important and we're missing them. We conceded the ball in the opening kick-off, allowing Nottingham to get what they wanted the most, defending with a lot of people, and then they had very fast players to counter-attack. We controlled it well, especially in the second half, we pushed forward again, but we weren't efficient enough in front of goal."
Manchester United are still out of a winning streak in the Premier League and will be back at home for the second leg of the Manchester derby against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, with Amorim looking to find his form with a double.
