Greece powerhouse Panathinaikos is in talks with Manchester United over the transfer of Facundo · Pellistri, with Athletic revealing that the team has agreed in principle to a four-year contract with the 22-year-old Uruguay winger. But the deal is not done yet, and several other clubs are interested in taking him on loan. However, Panathinaix is interested in buying him out, which could help make a deal with Manchester United.
Manchester United are leaning towards selling Pellistri on a permanent basis rather than another loan deal and asking for around €10 million. Pellistri spent the second half of last season on loan at La Liga side Granada, where he scored two goals in 15 appearances but failed to help the side avoid relegation. He has also previously played in La Liga twice on loan for Alaves, making 35 appearances in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
Pellistri now has one year left on his contract with Manchester United, with the option to extend for another year. The move to Panathinaikos will see Pellistri work again with compatriot Diego · Alonso, who has been appointed head coach of the Greece national team this summer.
Ten Hag has plenty of options for Manchester United's right winger position, with · Diallo, Garnacho, Antony, Sancho and even Marcus Rashford ahead of Pellistri. Prior to his loan spell in Spain, Pellistri made 14 appearances for United in the 2023/24 season but started just one Premier League game – a defeat to Crystal Palace in September.
Pellistri joined United from Peñarol in Uruguay for €10 million in 2020 and has only played 24 first-team games in four years, playing just 611 minutes in total, scoring no goals and providing only two assists. Pellistri was partly responsible for conceding a goal after coming off the bench at right-back in the final half-hour of the Community Shield against Manchester City, having been left out of the squad for last weekend's Premier League opener, which is believed to be linked to a transfer.
The sale of Pellistri will help United comply with the Premier League's PSR profitability and sustainability rules, with the summer transfer window closing on 30 August and United looking to sign another midfielder, with Manuel · Ugarte and Amrabat still under consideration · Sofyan. Among them, Pellistri's Uruguay team-mate Ugarte is Ten Hag's first choice, and Paris Saint-Germain has put a price tag of more than 50 million euros, but he agreed to sign a five-year contract with the Red Devils, and if he can sell Pepe for 10 million euros, it will be enough to amortize the cost of buying the man.
Uruguay are rumoured to be close to a move to Manchester United, but his transfer news lacks vocabulary and has been announced since last week that the Parisian iron waist is close to joining the Red Devils. According to Italy transfer expert Fabrizio · Romano, there is no breakthrough in the negotiations between the two clubs, and it is still the same as before, and if you want to make a deal, you will still want to lower the price of Paris, or Manchester United will succeed in selling a midfielder. Interestingly, on the official website of the Red Devils, winger Pellistri is listed as a midfielder.
Of course, Panathinaix may not be able to afford the high price of 10 million euros, and the team has not reached this amount for the most expensive player in history. If they want to make a deal, the Red Devils may need to cut the price slightly. Fabrizio Romano confirmed: "Panathinaix has not yet completed the advanced talks with Manchester United over the transfer of Pellistri, but the discussions continue and he could leave the club in the coming days."
United have sold five players permanently this summer: Alvaro · Fernandes to Benfica for €6 million plus a potential add-on of €3 million, Donny van de Beek to Girona for €500,000 could be raised to €4.5 million, Villarreal for Willy · Cambuvara for €11.5 million, Mason · Mason Greenwood for €31.6 million and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for £15 million to West Ham United. This means that if all the add-ons are activated, the five deals could raise a total of £63 million.
In addition to Pellistri, the midfielders who United may be successful in selling at the moment are Hannibal · Mejbri, Eriksen and Scott McTominay, defender Victor Lindelof is injured and winger Jadon Sancho is too expensive to stay this summer.
