Ten Hag was not carried away by United's comeback win over Brentford, admitting that a win was important to boost confidence before facing Fenerbahce at Jose Mourinho, but a defeat to Fenerbahce could cause the crisis to flare up again.
"Winning gives you confidence." Ten Hag said: "The more faith, the greater the faith. Even if you play really well, like we did at the start of the season, keep a clean sheet and create chances, but when you don't score, you don't win games, of course everybody is disappointed, everybody around you is disappointed. And if you play well and you win, the mood is high. But it's just a win and we have to think and realise that United have to win every game. So, we can only be happy for 24 hours and then we need to move on, but that will definitely boost our self-confidence."
With the Reds drawing their first two Europa League group games and facing former boss Jose Mourinho next, as well as two veterans of the Red Devils Fred and Amrabat, the game against Fenerbahce promises to be quite an interesting one. Mourinho is reportedly looking to do more than compound the misery for the current Manchester United manager.
Well-known journalist Pete ยท O'Rourke said Ten Hag was still at risk of sacking if United lost to Fenerbahce. The source told United Kingdom Football Insider: "Jose Mourinho would love to take this opportunity to make things worse for Ten Hag and his former club Manchester United."
Last season, Jose Mourinho and Ten Hag had an argument over the air. At the time, the Portugal 'madman' complained that he did not have the support of the club like Ten Hag when he was in charge, while the 54-year-old Netherlands countered that only Jose Mourinho got the players he wanted.
Jose Mourinho will be hoping to prove himself to his former club, and despite leading the team to the highest points and rankings in the post-Ferguson era, winning three trophies in one season, he was sacked. Fenerbahce's former Manchester United midfielder Fred is naturally keen to prove Ten Hag's decision to sell him in the summer of 2023 wrong.
Of course, Fenerbahce is not in a good situation at the moment, sitting fourth in the first round of the Turkish Super League, eight points behind leaders Galatasaray. In the first two rounds of the Europa League, the team ranked 13th with one win and one draw, but only separated from sixth place Ajax on goal difference.
Commenting on United's clash with Jose Mourinho, Ten Hag said: 'It's a big game for both of us and I'm really happy to play him. Jose Mourinho always leads the team to good results, he is a winner and has won a lot of trophies. I think he's a role model for many, many coaches, so I'm really enjoying playing against them."
Ten Hag has also praised Manchester United's Academy star Marcus Rashford, who played well as a right winger and provided the assist for a goal in the league at the weekend. "I liked his performance today." Speaking after the game, Ten Hag said: 'You can see what he's capable of and we want him to do that every game so he can contribute more to the team.'
Marcus Rashford has had his share of conflicts with Jose Mourinho in the past, and Ten Hag naturally wants the British star to try to show himself. 'He played very intensely and then he had a great cross. Of course, his finishing ability is also excellent, and this match is really exciting. I think everybody knows he's very capable and as long as he has that attitude, he's going to be involved in scoring goals, like he did at Porto before. He's going to have assists and he did that today. But it all starts with fighting spirit and 100% focus. When we bring that to the pitch, we will have a team that can improve and compete for trophies this season."
