The reporter reported coldly Thomas Tuchel's reintake of England was arguably the most shocking news in world football last week. As a historical and football traditional "sworn enemy", Germany's Tuchel at the helm of the Three Lions, just as Argentina's Bielsa coached Brazil, or Netherlands' Louis van Gaal coached Germany, are all unacceptable moves for local fans. But why Tuchel? In addition to the fact that the FA is worried about Manchester United stealing Tuchel's signing and "striking first", it is more that Tuchel is the "best solution" that the FA can find in the coaching market.
Tuchel's experience with four big clubs and 11 trophies, including the Champions League, is what gave him the confidence to secure an FA contract. It is true that the United Kingdom media have revealed that Tuchel is not the FA's first choice, but as a successful 'cup type' coach, Tuchel has the quality to coach England. The technical and tactical concept is in line with the FA's "big bet" on the World Cup, and at the same time it is familiar enough with English football. Perhaps Pep Guardiola's manager would be better suited to essentially elevate England's technical and tactical standards to true championship level, but the FA can't wait......
When FA CEO Brienham officially announced Thomas Tuchel as England's new manager on 16 October, his explanation for Tuchel's choice seemed convincing. Bringham highlighted the example of Netherlands women's coach Wiegmann. After being hired as the coach of the English women's football team, Wiegman led LinkedIn Gran Women's Football Team to win all six games, won the Women's European Championship for the first time, and led LinkedIn Gran Women's Football Team to win the European and American Champions League in 2023 and reach the final of the Women's World Cup for the first time. She made the FA realise that hiring a recognised winning coach and instilling confidence in the squad was a key factor.
Prior to this, England Women's Football Team had been from England and Wales and had failed to reach the Women's Euro final (1984 and 2009) and the Women's World Cup semi-finals (2015 and 2019). Wiegman, hired by the FA in 2021, is the same coach who led the Netherlands women's football team to the Women's European Championship in 2017. At the 2019 Women's World Cup, she brought the Netherlands women's football team to the final for the first time. She became the second coach to lead Netherlands to a major trophy after Michels (1988 men's European Championships). Five years later, Wiegman replicated that honour for England, becoming only the second Three Lions coach to win a major tournament after Sir Ramsey (the 1966 Men's World Cup). The Netherlands Football Association has erected a statue of Wigmann in the statue park representing the Lifetime Achievement Award, the first woman in Netherlands football to receive this award.
Compared to his predecessor Gareth Southgate, Tuchel's achievements have impressed the FA as much as his height (1.92m). Tuchel won 11 trophies in just eight seasons with the big four, and in 2019/20 he led Paris to a quadruple Grand Slam and a maiden Champions League final, an unprecedented feat that even Carlo Ancelotti could not have done. The following year he put out fires at Chelsea and led them to a continental Grand Slam in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup in 2021, also a record high for the Blues.
Tuchel has been voted Bundesliga Manager of the Year (2015/16), UEFA (2020/21) and FIFA (2021), with Italy's Capello the last Three Lions manager to match him. But Capello never won the Intercontinental Cup (the predecessor of the Club World Cup) or the UEFA and FIFA Best Coach titles. He and Eriksen both won the BBC Sports Coach of the Year award, while Robson was named Europe's best coach (1996/97) for leading Barcelona to the Spain Copa del Rey and the European Cup Winners' Cup, but never won a continental Grand Slam more than 30 years ago.
Looking at world football in recent years, Tuchel and Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, Zinedine Zidane and Klopp are among the top in terms of the number of heavyweight trophies alone, but the latter four are all unavailable to the FA. From a realistic point of view of hiring a 'winning coach', Tuchel is the only option for the FA and the reasonable.
Gareth Southgate has won two consecutive European Championship finals, and the FA has no time to continue to waste this 'golden generation'. Tuchel's success at Borussia Dortmund, Paris and Chelsea proves that he is a winning coach who knows better how to win cup competitions, and is the FA's "go-to" for the technical and tactical aspects of the World Cup. Eight of Tuchel's 11 trophies in his managerial career have been cup titles, showing that he is better at achieving success in the tournament.
In terms of technical and tactical style, the FA does not have the ideal coach of Pep Guardiola's passing style, but Tuchel's high pressing, full use of wide flanks and high-intensity running, has not only brought him cup success, but also is closer to the tradition of English football that emphasizes confrontation, speed and efficiency, and is more acceptable to England players. In particular, the 2023 and 2024 England women's and men's football teams lost to Spain in the Women's World Cup and Men's European Championship finals respectively, and the FA knows that the Three Lions are betting on the 2026 US-Canada-Mexico World Cup and cannot avoid the powerful Spain football.
In just 43 days in 2021, Tuchel defeated Pe Spain p Guardiola three times in the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League, won the Europa League champion coach Emery in the European Super Cup, and eliminated Zinedine Zidane, who won the Champions League three times in a row, in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Among the famous coaches who have been able to restrain Pep Guardiola in recent years, Klopp has done it at Liverpool and Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. But Jurgen Klopp is already Red Bull's global director of football, and the FA can't bring in Carlo Ancelotti, leaving Tuchel as the only possible option.
Of course, Tuchel hasn't always been successful in cup competitions. Chelsea's glory was underpinned by defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup final, the Champions League knockout rounds in charge of Bayern Munich by Pep Guardiola, who had learned his tactical improvements, and the Germany Cup by Saarbrรผcken, who had been knocked out of the lower divisions. On top of that, Pep Guardiola, who has successfully combined high strikers and passing tactics, is indeed the best candidate to elevate England's squad to the championship dimension. But in reality, it is unlikely that the FA will not hire Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires until next year and has the intention of renewing his contract. The FA can't wait to clash Manchester City for Pep Guardiola next summer, leaving the latter with a year to make a World Cup run that is even more risky. In the context of the big bet on the World Cup, Tuchel is already the most likely candidate on paper to lift the trophy for the Three Lions.
