The tragic passing of Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, on July 3rd sent shockwaves through the football community, occurring less than two weeks after the striker's wedding.

An ongoing investigation is looking into "the impressions left by one of the vehicle's wheels... all evidence suggests a potential excessive speed that exceeded the road's limit", stated the Civil Guard.

"All tests conducted thus far suggest that Diogo Jota was the driver of the vehicle," it added.

The authorities had previously mentioned that a tire likely blew out while the vehicle was attempting to overtake, leading to the crash and subsequent fire in the northwestern province of Zamora.

Just hours prior to the incident, Jota shared a video of his wedding to partner Rute Cardoso on June 22nd, with whom he had three children.

The deaths triggered a wave of sorrow, especially in the brothers' homeland of Portugal and at Jota's Premier League club Liverpool.

Political figures and prominent players from Portugal and Liverpool gathered with family and friends at the funeral on Saturday in the Porto suburb of Gondomar.

After stints at Atletico Madrid, Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jota became a beloved figure at Liverpool following his transfer to the Premier League club in 2020.

He scored 65 goals for the Reds over five seasons, winning the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22 and contributing to their record-equaling 20th English league title last season.

The striker also earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the squad that secured victory in this year's UEFA Nations League.

His younger brother Andre played as a midfielder for FC Penafiel in Portugal's second division.
