The Blagult, ranked sixth globally, had kicked off their Group C journey with a victory against Denmark and understood that another three points today would guarantee them a place in the quarter-finals.
In an effort to stop them and keep their tournament hopes alive, Poland entered this competition facing a tough challenge in Group C, as the White and Reds had not managed to avoid defeat in any of their last five encounters with teams ranked in FIFA’s top 10, including a loss in the opening round to Germany.
The Scandinavian team nearly took an early lead when Kosovare Asllani’s header struck the crossbar from close range. However, Poland failed to heed that warning, as Sweden hit the bar again ten minutes later with a looping header from Madelen Janogy.
Peter Gerhardsson’s team finally broke the deadlock after 27 minutes when Asllani’s precise cross was directed into the corner from inside the six-yard box by the head of Stina Blackstenius.
Sweden wasted two excellent chances to increase their lead in the final moments of the first half, with Blackstenius being denied by Poland’s goalkeeper Kinga Szemik before heading over from a great position just moments later.
The Swedes maintained complete control of the match in the early stages of the second half and went on to double their lead seven minutes after the break. The goal came from Asllani, who confidently headed Johanna Kaneryd’s cross into the net.
The three points were secured with about fifteen minutes remaining when substitute Lina Hurtig headed in Jonna Andersson’s corner.
The Blagult managed to see out the match to securethe 3-0 victory and qualification for the knockout stages ahead of their decisive group match against Germany on Saturday evening.
Poland, however, is facing the possibility of finishing their first ever EURO finals without earning a single point.
