Manchester United's interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has confirmed that he will continue to direct his squad for the next three games. The Red Devils host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, play against Theokssaloniki at Old Trafford in midweek and return at home to Leicester City on 10 November. This means Ruud van Nistelrooy will become the only manager in United history to play all of their games at home.
Ruud van Nistelrooy led a big win over Leicester City on Wednesday's interim debut as his manager, breaking Ten Hag's record in less than an hour. The Red Devils were lucky in the game, winning 4-2 in the first half and winning 5-2.
Scoring five goals against a Premier League side is something Ten Hag has never done in more than two years in charge, and the only game in his time with him to score more than five goals was in the Carabao Cup last round, when United thrashed Barnsley 7-0, but against League One sides two levels lower. Ten Hag's biggest win against a top team was 4-1, beating Chelsea in the Premier League and Real Betis in La Liga.
During the game, fans saw legendary manager Sir Alex Alex Ferguson, who had not been in attendance for many games before Ten Hag's dismissal, appear at Old Trafford and smile after witnessing the team's victory.
Ruud van Nistelrooy revealed that he had spoken to Lord Fernandes before the first match, and the old man sent his blessings. "Yes, I talked to him and he wished me good luck." Ruud van Nistelrooy said: "We had a brief discussion about my situation and the form of the team. Most of all, he wishes me good luck and it's always a wonderful thing to talk to."
Asked if he had ever thought about returning to the Reds in that capacity after falling out with Ferguilla and Cristiano Ronaldo 18 years ago, the Dutch striker replied: "No, I didn't think about being a coach at the time. I left Manchester United in 2006 to join Real Madrid in order to continue playing and reach my full potential as a player. After that, I started thinking about becoming a coach and it felt special to go back to the club and the city I love. I enjoyed it all. I love being with Manchester United, the players and the staff, even though they don't have much left now."
Ruud van Nistelrooy also revealed what he had said to his Manchester United players ahead of the game. "I conveyed that wonderful feeling of playing for the club, standing in front of the team and giving the team speech and telling them what Manchester United is and what the fans are singing and why they are playing at Old Trafford. To be able to do that and share that, and the way I interact with the audience, is a proud moment. It just gives me more strength to give my best and we're going to give it our all against Chelsea on Sunday.'
Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed that he has not spoken to United's next boss, Ruben Amorim, but has reiterated his desire to stay and help the team return to the top.
"I decided to come back here for a very important reason. I came here as an assistant coach to help the club move forward and in whatever capacity I will continue to work hard. I really want to stay here and help the club move forward, that's definitely my goal. It's been very clear that I'm a temporary manager and I'm happy with that. Then I will reinstate my assistant coaching contract for this season and next. When a new manager is signed and negotiations are underway, we have to see how things play out."
Because Amorim has three assistants of his own, if Ruud van Nistelrooy stays, he will not be able to continue in this role, and he may need to be "demoted", for example as a striker coach or other management role.
