The champions of the 2022 A-League Men have been excluded from the men's and women's competitions for the 2025/26 season due to ongoing financial difficulties.

An independent board, separate from A-League management, has determined that the Tarneit-based clubWestern United (WUFC) has not fulfilled its licensing obligations for the 2025/26 season.

Football Australia confirms that the first instance board – an independent entity established under the National Club Licensing Regulations – has convened and concluded that Western United FC has not met the necessary criteria to obtain an A-League license," stated Football Australia on Friday afternoon.

"Consequently, Western United FC's license has been revoked, effective immediately.

Western United FC has the right to appeal this decision to the designated appeals body under the regulations on specific grounds outlined in the rules.

This decision prohibits WUFC from participating in all Football Australia competitions, including the A-League Men, A-League Women, and Australia Cup.

Western United has expressed its intention to contest the decision ahead of a club statement expected on Friday.

This is an evolving story. Stay tuned for further updates...
