It is becoming clear that Nicolas Jackson is being considered as a potential signing, with club sources suggesting he is seen as a direct substitute for Isak, who is eager to move to Liverpool in what would be a record-breaking British transfer.
This represents another tumultuous turn in what is shaping up to be an extremely frustrating summer on Tyneside.
Newcastle has already missed out on several key targets, the most recent being Benjamin Sesko, who has completed a transfer to Manchester United. However, the situation with Isak now looms large.
The Swedish striker has experienced a significant breakdown in relations within the club, with tensions rising in recent weeks. Isak was even advised to avoid a club family barbecue amidst the fallout.
While Liverpool has been closely monitoring his situation and has personal terms ready for a transfer, Newcastle has maintained that they will not permit a sale until they secure a replacement.
They believe that replacement could be Jackson.
The Magpies are actively pursuing a deal for the Chelsea forward, aiming to make an offer of around £60 million. However, Chelsea is asking for closer to £80 million and is reportedly encouraging rival interest to bolster their position. Bayern Munich is among the clubs in the mix.
Nonetheless, Newcastle’s interest is genuine. The club views Jackson as a stylistically suitable candidate to potentially fill the Isak gap, and his signing could pave the way for the current star striker to move to Anfield.
Jackson is not the only player under consideration. Interest in Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins has not diminished, though acquiring him remains challenging.
Meanwhile, Newcastle is also monitoring Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
Sources suggest that rather than viewing him as a replacement for Isak, he is more likely to be seen as a substitute for Callum Wilson - who has moved to West Ham United.
