Manchester United lost 0-1 at home to Arsenal in the Premier League opener. Goalkeeper Baindil mishandled a corner kick early in the match, leading to Karafiori's header. However, there was a suspected foul by the Gunners before the goal. The referee made multiple contentious calls afterward, causing the Red Devils to feel wronged. Despite controlling the game and having more opportunities, they could not capitalize, with 22 shots resulting in no goals. Yet, the inability to score has been Manchester United's biggest problem in recent years; the £200 million new attack improved the team's performance but did not change the outcome of not scoring and losing.
Head coach Ruben Amorim did not include the €85 million new striker Sheshko in the starting lineup and also left out the original number 9, Hojlund, who didn’t even make the matchday squad, indicating that the club is pushing him towards a transfer. Mason Mount teamed up with two other new signings, Cunha and Mbeumo, to form a trident attack. However, the no-striker 3-4-3 formation has been ineffective in the last two preseason matches, with United’s only goal coming from an opponent's own goal.
Amorim also opted not to use the returning Andre Onana, giving Baindil another chance to prove himself in the Premier League. However, he failed to seize this opportunity; last season against Tottenham, he was beaten by a corner, and this time he fell into the same trap. Some believe that nearly 40-year-old Tom Heaton might have been a better choice.
Baindil will certainly complain about William Saliba's challenge on him, but he should have been prepared for such pressure before the match. If he can't adapt, he may have to leave the Premier League. David De Gea, who was new to the league back then, also grew through similar challenges. In comparable situations, Arsenal's David Raya has proven to be much more formidable than Baindil.
After taking a 1-0 lead away from home, Arsenal employed the usual tactic that opponents use against Manchester United: retreating to defend after scoring, believing the Red Devils cannot break through. United played well and had many opportunities to equalize or even take the lead, but they still failed to convert.
Some of this was due to bad luck, such as Patrick Doku's long-range shot hitting the far post in the 30th minute.
There were also excellent saves by the goalkeeper, as Raya repeatedly denied low shots from Cunha after a solo run, as well as a close-angle effort, keeping Arsenal's net intact. United went into halftime trailing 0-1.
Ten minutes into the second half, Amorim substituted Amad Diallo for the right wing-back position, and shortly after, Sheshko came on to bolster the attack.
Mbeumo had two brilliant shots, first a bicycle kick that went wide, followed by a header that was superbly saved by Raya.
Before the match ended, several decisions by the referee sparked serious discontent among the 70,000 fans at Old Trafford. First, Cunha was fouled in the small box while trying to control the ball, but the referee remained unmoved as Saliba challenged him.
In the dying moments of stoppage time, Maguire was involved in a tug-of-war and collision with Timber and Gabriel while contesting a high ball, yet the referee and VAR officials turned a blind eye. Ultimately, Manchester United suffered a 0-1 home defeat, marking the eighth time in history they have lost their opening league match.
Regardless of how dominant they were or how many chances they created, Amorim was undoubtedly unhappy with the final result, which marked his 15th defeat in 28 Premier League matches since taking over in November! This is the fastest record for a non-promoted team's coach to reach 15 losses since Paul Hart at Portsmouth in 2009.
Manchester United played beautifully but lost, while Arsenal won in an unattractive fashion, yet they laughed last. Amorim needs to address the team's scoring issues; regardless of how the process looks, the most important thing is to put the ball in the opponent's net, and United's players, including in preseason, have now gone three matches without achieving that. This is all too familiar.
Amorim may also need to consider reinforcements for the goalkeeper position, even though he defended 26-year-old Baindil post-match. The United manager expressed dissatisfaction with external opinions suggesting Heaton should play and reminded everyone that Baindil had saved two penalties against Arsenal in the FA Cup, becoming a hero for their advancement.
He also mentioned the alleged foul by Arsenal during the corner attack: "Why? He conceded such a goal without VAR intervention. Against Tottenham, if VAR had been involved, that would have been a foul. Then, in the FA Cup against Arsenal, who saved the penalties and rescued the match? It wasn’t just the shootout; there were moments before that. You might not remember that match, but I do; he was incredible, so I thought long and hard and chose Al-Tay.
However, aside from questioning the rules and decisions, Amorim admitted that Manchester United was somewhat naive in defending against Arsenal, who are good at set pieces, and did not fully execute their responsibilities. You cannot solely rely on referee intervention; you must first use your own strength to stop the opponent.
Amorim stated: "I believe that analyzing the process of conceding goals, the opponent was allowed to do a lot. During the corner, we need to do the same. However, when the goalkeeper faces such contact from the opponent, he can only choose to punch the ball away rather than push the opponent away, or he chooses to push the opponent away and let the ball go past. Al-Tay chose to handle the ball, but he was pushed and unable to connect properly. That’s my feeling, but if the rules allow, we need to do the same."
In attack, Amorim's 3-4-3 formation showed better results, with wing-backs Doku and Diogo Dalot being very active, and Amad performing even better after coming on. Cunha and Mbeumo also displayed impressive individual skills, making threatening runs against the Gunners' defense.
The advantage in play gave fans hope again after the match, believing that Manchester United is on the right track. However, the team still has significant shortcomings. Merely being on the right path is not enough; they must move quickly, and Amorim needs to ensure that his midfielders and forwards start scoring against opponents. Refereeing is an uncontrollable factor, and the Red Devils must maintain this positive mindset on the pitch while improving their scoring efficiency.
