After Ruben Amorim officially becomes Manchester United manager next week, a decision will be made on whether to renew the contract of England centre-back Harry Maguire. Former Reds chief scout Mike Brown has revealed that the 31-year-old is expected to play a bigger role under the new boss due to his expertise in playing three centre-backs.
Maguire's contract with Manchester United is in its final year, and the British media have revealed that he has been waiting for Ten Hag to step down before deciding on his long-term future. It has been suggested that the £80million centre-back could be the beneficiary of Amorim's tenure, as the new boss prefers a back three and Maguire is a perfect fit for that system.
If Ten Hag continues to coach, there is a high chance that Maguire will leave. Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford were two of the 54-year-old Dutchman's unresponsive players after his sack, with a number of team-mates, including Bruno Fernandes, expressing regret to Ten Hag, but the two England internationals were unmoved. And in the past week, both have been quite active on social media.
But Amorim will have to play in a three-man centre-back and Maguire has shown that he is at home in that tactic for England. According to the British media, he will firmly reject the transfer plan to leave Manchester United in January and hope to conquer Amorim.
United have a one-year option of first refusal on Maguire's £190,000-a-week contract, with the option to activate a clause to keep him in the squad for next season. Maguire is said to see a boost in his role in the starting line-up, which increases his chances of getting a new contract.
Amorim will assess United's squad in the months following his official arrival in charge on 11 November, with Harry Maguire's future being one of several issues that need to be addressed. Maguire has made nine appearances in all competitions so far this season, but has only started three times in the Premier League. Maguire is currently recovering from an injury.
Mack Brown believes Harry Maguire should play a bigger role in United's squad: "The new manager wants to play with a back three. In that case, I think Maguire became one of the starting three. He's got to get fit first, but once he gets back to training, I'm sure Amorim will keep an eye on him because he's a perfect fit for the system."
Brown added: "His contract will be a big issue that the new manager will have to deal with. Whether it's to extend his contract or let him go, Amorim will make a decision. Whatever the reason, he has fallen out of favour under Ten Hag and if he continues to coach, I think Maguire will most likely be allowed to leave. But now the addition of Amorim gives him a chance to impress and earn a place."
The future of a number of Manchester United's centre-backs, including Harry Maguire, is unclear. The 30-year-old is also entering a contract year and there is no first refusal clause in his contract. Evans is 36 years old and on the verge of retirement. Although there are also De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Lenny Yoro, they are certainly not enough to play in three central defenders, and keeping one of Maguire, Lindelof and Evans is a solution to consider.
Amorim has been revealed to be interested in bringing in Portuguese sporting favouritesGonzalo S.Inácio,Ousman Diomandand other central defenders, but at least next summer to make a move. Until then, Maguire has a chance to prove himself with his performances, just as he did to save Ten Hag over the past two seasons.
