Australian hero wary of the strength of Vietnam's national team

Striker Holly Furphy expressed admiration for the Vietnamese women’s team following her victory in the 2025 Southeast Asian Women’s Football Championship with Australia.

The Australian women’s national team officially claimed the championship title at the 2025 Southeast Asian Women’s Football Tournament with a narrow win over Myanmar thanks to a single goal scored by forward Holly Furphy.

After the match, Australia’s number 9 was extremely happy with the championship and also spoke highly of Myanmar, the team that had previously defeated the Aussies.

She shared: “I am incredibly happy and truly proud to be part of this team. It’s a huge honor. Honestly, I can’t fully express my joy right now.

I must say, in my opinion, Myanmar is a really tough team to face, and we lost to them in the opening round. After that, we had to regroup, discuss our strategy, and figure out how to handle them. They played well today, but in the end, we united as a team, and that was fantastic.”

Additionally, the hero of the Australian women’s team didn’t forget to compliment the Vietnamese players, stating that the hosts made things difficult and caused Furphy and her teammates concern in the semifinals.

The star born in 2002 added: “Vietnam is an amazing team and they gave us a really tough semifinal match.

They fought until the very last minute, and before that game, I think it was the match we were most anxious about. They played with great determination and deserve recognition—congratulations to them for finishing third. A fantastic team.”

As for the Vietnamese women’s team, although they couldn’t reach the final, the “Golden Girls” still delivered a brilliant performance for their home fans in the third-place playoff, defeating Thailand 3-1, which helped ease the pain after a narrow loss to Australia.

After their campaign in the 2025 Southeast Asian Women’s Football Championship, coach Mai Duc Chung’s squad will now focus on their next major target: the 2026 Women’s Asean Cup. This will be another chance for Vietnam to qualify for the World Cup for the second time, following their debut in 2023.
