The first round of the 2025 US Open has concluded. Among the highly watched Chinese players, only Wang Xinyu out of the eight mainland players who appeared in the main draw secured a victory. She came back from a 2-6 6-4 6-2 scoreline to defeat local player Dolehide, marking her third consecutive season advancing at least to the second round at the US Open.
Winning only 1 out of 8 matches represents the lowest success rate for mainland players in this season's Grand Slam tournaments. Earlier this year, the Australian Open saw 11 players with 4 wins, the French Open had 4 players with 1 win, and Wimbledon had 6 players with 1 win. Of course, this low winning rate is also linked to generally unfavorable draws for Chinese players at this year’s US Open.
Among all eight singles players, four faced seeded opponents in the first round. Wang Yafan, Wang Xiyu, Zhang Shuai, and Yuan Yue were defeated by seeds [10] Navarro, [25] Ostapenko, [16] Bencic, and [17] Samsonova respectively. Another player, Zhu Lin, who was eliminated, did not face a seeded player initially but played against Potapova, who is considered a strong competitor on the tour.
In contrast, the two male singles players, Bu Yunchaokete and Shang Juncheng, had slightly better draws, although neither managed to win their matches.
As the absolute rising star of Chinese men’s tennis, Shang Juncheng retired due to injury while trailing 6-7(0)/6-1/3-6/0-3 against Berrettini. Reports indicate severe bruising on his left foot significantly affected his movement and performance during the match. After exiting the US Open in the first round, Shang has unfortunately been unable to complete either of the two Grand Slam tournaments he has entered this season.
Bu Yunchaokete, competing in his fifth Grand Slam main draw in his career, still has not secured his first win. Facing French wildcard Ruotai, the final score was 1-6/4-6/6-7(1). Despite the disappointing result, Bu showed strong fighting spirit during the match, especially in the third set. Maintaining this mindset, winning matches in the future is only a matter of time.
Currently the only singles player remaining in the draw, Wang Xinyu will face [13] Aleksandrova in the next round. They have met three times before, with Wang leading 2-1. Their most recent encounter was in the quarterfinals of last year’s Wuhan Open, where Wang saved match points to win.
Of course, although singles players have been eliminated, there are still many doubles matches to look forward to. The women’s doubles draw at the US Open has been released, with several pairs including Chinese players matched up as follows:
Yuan Yue/Osorio vs [15] Mihalikova/Nichols
[12] Zhang Shuai/Aleksandrova vs Christian/Moratelli
Tang Qianhui/Santamaria vs Bolt/Qatar
[10] Jiang Xinyu/Zhan Haoqing vs Wang Yafan/Aoyama Shuko
[8] Guo Hanyu/Panova vs Detiuk/Pridankina
Xu Yifan/Yang Zhaoxuan vs [W] Pareja/Urhob
Zheng Saisai/Zhu Lin vs Niculescu/Sevastova
We look forward to more players achieving victories at this year’s US Open!(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
