With the US Open approaching its second round, the eagerly awaited China Open participant list was unveiled today. As in previous years, this event featuring both men and women draws 14 Grand Slam champions and 5 former world number ones.
Highlighted players include Zheng Qinwen, Wang Xinyu, Wang Yafan, Sabalenka, Sinner, Swiatek, Gauff, and Medvedev. Let’s review the detailed lineup.
On the men’s singles side, the world number one and defending champion from two years ago, Sinner, will compete again. Last year, he lost his title after leading in the final set tiebreak against Alcaraz, marking his only hardcourt defeat in a long time.
Zverev, who has reached the semifinals here three times before, is no stranger to competing and winning in China. He was once the runner-up at the Shanghai Masters and is a strong contender for the championship this time.
Also in the top ten are De Minaur and Khachanov. The Australian "Little Bunny" has consistently been a strong competitor in 500-level tournaments and has already won the Washington event this year.
The Russian trio will all participate, led by Rublev, who recently returned to the top ten after finishing runner-up at the Canadian Masters. Among them is world number ten Musetti, whose performance in last year’s China season was disappointing, but this year he has significant ranking points to gain and stands a good chance.
Near the Grand Slam seed rankings are three Masters players — Menchik, Tsitsipas, and Norrie. Tsitsipas’s participation is particularly interesting; although he was a finalist here back in 2019, his relationship with Chinese fans is known to be somewhat strained.
Other notable players include the rapidly rising Fucsovics, Cerundolo, and Copil. Additionally, consistent performers like Griekspoor, Pellicard, Bublik, Sonego, as well as veterans like Carreno Busta and Monfils, will also attract some fan attention.
On the women’s side, with the tournament’s higher category, the player quality is even stronger. Unless unexpected events occur, top-ranked players will all participate. Chinese fans will have the chance to see Grand Slam champions like Swiatek, Sabalenka, Rybakina, and Gauff up close.
Notably, Zheng Qinwen, who has been absent from competition for a long time, will return starting from the Asian season. How she performs post-surgery will be closely watched by fans back home.Source: Tennis Home, Author: Luo Chengqiye
