English tennis player Jack Draper, seeded fifth at the 2025 US Open, stunned the tennis world by announcing his withdrawal just before his second-round match against Zizou Bergs.
This decision was made because Draper could no longer compete due to a left arm injury, leaving tennis fans regretful to see one of the top contenders exit the tournament prematurely.
The 23-year-old Draper had just won his first-round match against qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez in four sets. Although the match was lengthy, he seemed fine. However, before facing Bergs, Draper disclosed on social media platform X that his left arm injury had worsened. "I’m very sorry to announce that I will be withdrawing from the US Open," he wrote. "I tried my best to be here and compete, but the pain in my arm became unbearable. I have to do the right thing and take care of myself. Thanks to everyone for the support."
According to the United States Tennis Association (USTA), Draper’s withdrawal is due to a bone injury in his left arm, specifically inflammation in the humerus bone, which he has been dealing with for about two months. Before the tournament, Draper insisted that this injury was not a major concern and that he was focused on regaining his form on hard courts. However, the reality proved otherwise. During the first-round match, he admitted he couldn’t serve at full power, which significantly affected his performance.
Jack Draper, the 5th seed at the 2025 US Open, unexpectedly withdrew
Jack Draper was once a major hope for British tennis at the 2024 US Open, reaching the semifinals without losing a set before losing to champion Jannik Sinner. This performance earned him the No. 5 seed this year and reinforced his position as one of the promising young players. Additionally, Draper made a mark this year by winning the ATP 1000 title at Indian Wells, the biggest title of his career so far. However, his pursuit of a first Grand Slam title remains unfinished, especially after a surprising defeat to Marin Cilic in the second round at Wimbledon two months ago.
Withdrawing from the US Open means Draper’s journey ended in the second round, a disappointing result compared to expectations. His opponent, Zizou Bergs, was awarded the win and moved on to the third round without playing. For fans, Draper’s absence is a major loss, especially as he was seen as one of the players capable of causing surprises at this year’s tournament.
Draper is currently facing a significant challenge in recovering from his injury and regaining his form. He had shared before the tournament that his preparation for the US Open was not perfect due to the injury and time off after Wimbledon. However, with his proven talent, fans hope he will make a strong comeback, especially at the 2026 Australian Open.
