American rap star Drake has placed another bet on Sinner at the US Open, after losing $210,000 on the Italian player last year. This time, he is backing Sinner to repeat as champion, with potential winnings exceeding $500,000 if successful.
During the 2024 US Open, Drake, famous for his extravagant sports betting, staked $210,000 on Fritz to win the final. He posted a screenshot of the bet on Instagram with the caption: “Keeping my record as the boldest yet biggest losing sports bettor ever. Betting on an underdog.” Unfortunately, Sinner’s easy victory cost the rapper more than $800,000 in potential prize money.
This year, Drake took the opposite approach, betting $300,000 on world number one Sinner to win the 2025 US Open. The five-time Grammy winner stands to earn over $500,000 if successful. Drake’s public large sports bets are well known, though he doesn’t always win. The so-called “Drake curse” meme is widely spread online, suggesting that teams or athletes he supports often lose. Whether it’s UFC fighters or boxing matches, fans claim he brings bad luck.
At the 2024 US Open, Drake’s heavy bet on Fritz to beat Sinner further fueled the “curse” theory. Now, with Drake backing Sinner to win, fans of the world number one might worry about the curse, but the Italian has already broken it once in a big match.
On his way to the 2025 Australian Open final, Sinner was in excellent form, ultimately facing Zverev. Before the match, Drake bet $250,000 on him to win, with the curse seemingly looming again, but the outcome was clear. Sinner won the title, and Drake earned $345,000.
Sinner hopes to break the “Drake curse” again at the 2025 US Open in a similar fashion. He has been steady in this tournament, defeating Poplin, 27th seed Shapovalov, and 23rd seed Bublik. In the fourth round, the top seed broke serve eight times, faced only one break point, and secured victory in 1 hour and 21 minutes—making it the second shortest completed men’s singles match in this event.
“We know each other very well, especially this year after some tough battles, so we understand each other’s play styles better,” Sinner said. “He congratulated me after the match and wished me well. He played a five-set battle last time and finished late, so his serve wasn’t as sharp today. That allowed me to break early in every set, which boosted my confidence on serve.”
Next, the world number one will face compatriot Musetti in the quarterfinals, marking their third encounter. Sinner currently leads their head-to-head 2-0. “It’s really great. Italian tennis is in excellent shape now, with many players having different styles,” Sinner said. “Lorenzo might be one of the biggest talents in our sport, and I’m really looking forward to this match. From Italy’s perspective, having an Italian guaranteed in the semifinals is amazing.”(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
