Carlos Alcaraz is confident that Jannik Sinner will make a stronger comeback following his defeat in the 2025 US Open final
Carlos Alcaraz, the world number one, stated that he must prepare for a renewed Jannik Sinner after defeating the Italian opponent in the 2025 US Open final. This marked their fourth consecutive Grand Slam final meeting, with each player having won two titles.
Sinner admitted that his playing style had become predictable and needed change after his loss in New York. Previously, Sinner had beaten Alcaraz at Wimbledon but was defeated at Roland Garros and the US Open. The world number two feels he must improve to avoid falling behind his peer again.
Meanwhile, Alcaraz praised Sinner's potential for growth. The Spanish player emphasized that after each loss to his rival, he himself has improved to come back stronger. Therefore, he believes their next encounter will be an even greater challenge as Sinner will have learned many lessons.
“We will see how many times and under what circumstances I will face him again in the future. Right now, everything is great.”, Alcaraz emphasized.
This week, Alcaraz is participating in the Japan Open in Tokyo, while Sinner returns to compete at the China Open in Beijing. This is Alcaraz’s first time playing in Japan. The 22-year-old expressed excitement about experiencing a new atmosphere and the energy from Japanese fans.
Before coming to Tokyo, Alcaraz took part in the Laver Cup in San Francisco, where he and Team Europe lost to Team World. The Spanish player also unexpectedly lost to Taylor Fritz, currently ranked world number five, in singles. At the Japan Open, Fritz is seeded second, alongside Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, and Tomas Machac.
Alcaraz has won the Roland Garros and US Open titles this year, marking the most successful season of his career. The Spanish player now holds two Grand Slam titles this season and four major trophies in total. He also maintains the number one spot on the ATP rankings, leading Sinner by over 700 points.
