China Open Update: Sinner and Medvedev Advance, Artmann to Challenge Sinner Again

After two days of competition, the first round of the ATP 500 Beijing tournament has concluded.

1/4 SectionTop seed Sinner comfortably beat veteran Cilic to progress. Meanwhile, 5th seed Khachanov was defeated in three sets by French player Muller, exiting in the opening round. Sinner is now the sole seeded player left in this section.

Second round matchups in the 1/4 section

In the second round, Sinner will face French rising star Artmann. Remember last month’s Cincinnati Masters? Artmann came through qualifying and reached the semifinals, eventually losing to Sinner 6-7(4), 2-6. This time, Artmann will challenge Sinner again, likely with better stamina since that was Sinner’s eighth consecutive match, while this is only their fourth encounter in a row. At Cincinnati, Artmann defeated Nishikori, Kobori, Fonseca, Fritz, and Rune before falling to Sinner in the semis.

Therefore, this match is highly anticipated.

2/4 SectionThird seed Deminarl defeated Chinese player Buyun Chaokte 6-4, 6-0 in straight sets. The skill gap was obvious.

In the second round, Deminarl will face Lindgrenesi, who surprisingly beat Goffin to advance. Both players competed in two qualifying matches.

Qualifier Kazo defeated Shang Juncheng. Technically, Shang is not inferior to Kazo, but stamina is a weakness. In the second round, Kazo will face Mensik in their first-ever meeting — a youthful showdown.

3/4 SectionSixth seedRublev lost again to Italian player Kobori. Their first encounter was at this year’s Hamburg final, where Rublev narrowly missed the title. Kobori’s two appearances at the Laver Cup and experience with top players seem to have benefited him.

In the second round, Kobori will face Lenerchen, who defeated F. Cerundolo to advance. This is their first meeting. Lenerchen has also beaten Rublev earlier this year in Washington. Let’s see how they compete in Beijing.

37-year-old veteran Mannarino beat last week’s Hangzhou Open champion Bublik 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets. Unexpectedly, Mannarino settled an old score from five years ago at Doha — their head-to-head is now tied 1-1.

In the second round, Mannarino will face 4th seed Musetti, who has defeated powerful server Pericard four times.

4/4 SectionEighth seed Medvedev finally won a match, beating British player Norrie 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets. This also avenged his first-round loss to Norrie at the French Open. With Khachanov and Rublev out, Medvedev maintains the honor of the “Russian Big Three.”

In the second round, Medvedev will play Fokina.

Second seed Zverev defeated Sonego to advance and will face French player Moutet in the second round. Although their head-to-head is 1-0 in Zverev’s favor, Moutet has been in good form recently, so Zverev should remain cautious.

Looking forward to a quarterfinal rematch between Medvedev and Zverev. Their last encounter was at this year’s Halle tournament, where Zverev has lost four consecutive matches. Hopefully, he can turn things around this time.
