Jannik Sinner encountered a tough battle against Terence Atmane in the round of 16 at the China Open this year.
World No. 2 Jannik Sinner defeated Terence Atmane 2-1 (6-4; 5-7; 6-0) in the round of 16 match of the ATP 500 China Open 2025 this afternoon on September 27th, Vietnam time.
Terence Atmane, ranked 68th globally, has been one of the most intriguing breakthroughs in tennis this year. Before August, Atmane was outside the top 100, but after a remarkable run to the semifinals at the Cincinnati Open, the French player made a significant leap in the rankings and gained widespread recognition.
Atmane’s powerful and decisive style, demonstrated through his serves and forehands, troubled Sinner. However, the main reason Sinner needed three sets to win stemmed from his own statement after his opening victory over Marin Cilic two days earlier.
The Italian player confirmed he would experiment with his tactics to the fullest, regardless of possible mistakes, aiming to improve continuously and ultimately defeat Carlos Alcaraz to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking. In today’s match against Atmane, Sinner actively approached the net, used drop shots, and executed passing shots when his opponent came forward.
Adjusting to this new approach caused Sinner to commit noticeably more errors, especially in the second set where he lost three service games, including the crucial one that led the defending China Open finalist to lose 5-7 and push the match to a decisive third set.
In the final set, Sinner regained his best form, while Atmane showed signs of exhaustion after enduring many tough shots, allowing Sinner to dominate 6-0 and secure a hard-fought 2-1 overall victory.
This win advances the Italian player to the quarterfinals of this year’s China Open, where he will face Fabian Marozsan from Hungary.
