Has a player of the same level ever caused consecutive losses? Fritz’s six straight wins over Zverev are nothing special!

The two ATP 500 men’s events are progressing intensely, and the twin stars Alcaraz and Sinner are clearly the biggest contenders for the titles.

Coincidentally, top five players Fritz and Zverev are seeded second, naturally playing the role of powerful challengers to the strongest players.

The two recently met at the Laver Cup. Facing his protégé, Fritz once again performed excellently, defeating his opponent and marking his sixth consecutive victory over him. The American No.1 has now achieved a six-match winning streak against Zverev.

Logically, as two top five players, their head-to-head results shouldn’t be so one-sided, but the statistics tell a different story.

In their last 14 encounters, Zverev won five times, which doesn’t seem too weak, but narrowing it down to the last 10 matches, he only secured two wins. The recent six-match losing streak started at last year’s Wimbledon. Fritz, who has won multiple grass-court titles, naturally has an advantage on this surface compared to Zverev, who has yet to claim a grass title and has his poorest Grand Slam results at Wimbledon.

Next, at the home US Open, Fritz advanced to the final, achieving his best Grand Slam result, including a victory over Zverev on his way there.

Adding last year’s Laver Cup, the ATP Finals, and this year’s Stuttgart final, Fritz has won all his matches against the German, leading Zverev to complain at the Stuttgart awards ceremony, “I never want to see Fritz again.”

Not just them, even among the top stars nearing retirement, one-sided streaks have occurred, with a maximum of seven consecutive wins.

The last match between Federer and Nadal was the 2019 Wimbledon semifinal, where Federer won their final encounter; before that, Nadal defeated Federer again at the French Open semifinal; going further back, Federer had a six-match winning streak over Nadal.

This streak began at the 2015 Basel tournament. By 2017, Federer had beaten Nadal at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami, and Shanghai, with three of those wins in finals. They didn’t meet in 2018, but at the 2019 Sunshine Double, Federer again defeated Nadal.

Djokovic’s seven-match winning streak against Nadal started at the 2015 Monte Carlo Masters, where he triumphed in Nadal’s stronghold, proving his clay-court prowess.

That year is considered Djokovic’s strongest ever. Subsequently, he blocked this lifelong rival at the French Open, China Open, ATP Finals, Doha, Rome, and other venues. This streak rivals his 2011-2012 period when he repeatedly defeated Nadal in finals.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Luo Cheng Qi Ye)
