Djokovic drawn into a challenging section at the 2025 Shanghai Masters
Novak Djokovic is the current runner-up and the most decorated player in the history of the Shanghai Masters, having won the tournament four times.
Novak Djokovic marks his comeback after the 2025 US Open by participating in the Shanghai Masters, which starts on October 1st in Shanghai, China.
This is also Djokovic’s first ATP 1000 event since the Madrid Open in mid-April this year. Nole has expressed dissatisfaction with the current two-week schedule for Masters tournaments, and one reason for his presence in China is his affection for the local fan community.
According to the draw released by the organizers today, September 29, Djokovic has been placed in a very unpredictable section: not overly difficult, but far from easy.
Seeded, Djokovic will skip the first round (round of 64). His opponent in the second round (round of 32) will be a former Grand Slam champion - Marin Cilic or Corentin Moutet, both of whom are challenging adversaries.
Although Cilic’s form has declined noticeably due to age, his powerful serve and thunderous forehand remain a significant challenge for any competitor. Moutet, while lacking Cilic's power, compensates with a tricky and unpredictable playing style.
If Djokovic advances past the second round, his path to the semifinals could become smoother. His likely next opponent is Frances Tiafoe or Lorenzo Sonego , who are considered relatively manageable opponents. Even in the fourth round (round of 16), players like Andrey Rublev, Flavio Cobolli or Jaume Munar are still within Nole’s reach.
Similarly, Djokovic’s quarterfinal obstacle isn’t too daunting. The strongest opponent he might face is Ben Shelton, although the American player has just returned from a shoulder injury. Other potential rivals for Nole in this round include Casper Ruud, Matteo Berrettini, Sebastian Korda, Benjamin Bonzi and Gabriel Diallo, among others.
The toughest competitor for the 38-year-old in this section will be the defending champion Jannik Sinner, alongside Taylor Fritz , who has never beaten Nole in their careers.
Novak Djokovic is the reigning runner-up at the Shanghai Masters after losing to Jannik Sinner in the 2024 final. He is also the most successful player in the tournament’s history, having won four titles in five final appearances.
