2025 China Open: Zheng Qinwen Withdraws Due to Injury, Women's Singles Round of 16 Set

On September 29th, Beijing time, the 2025 China Open held the women's singles upper half third round alongside the men's singles quarterfinals. Zheng Qinwen, appearing in the night match on Diamond Court, retired injured at 4-6/6-3/0-3 against 26th seed Noskova, thus failing to reach the women's singles last 16.

Zheng Qinwen suffered a break in her second service game early on and fell behind 1-3, but then she broke back and held serve consecutively to level at 3-3. In the seventh game, despite saving two break points from 0-40, she failed to hold serve, and Noskova maintained steady serving to take the first set 6-4. In the second set’s sixth game, Zheng secured an early break and then dominated her service game to win 6-3, leveling the match. Noskova quickly built a 3-0 lead in the deciding set, but Zheng requested a medical timeout due to elbow discomfort during the changeover. After evaluation, she decided to retire. We hope the Chinese star recovers swiftly without serious injury.

Noskova’s opponent in the fourth round will be Potapova, who defeated Semezh 6-3/7-5, marking her second entry into the WTA 1000 round of 16 this year following Madrid.

Today’s China Open saw an unexpected wave of withdrawals. After the top-seeded men's doubles pair Kachashvili/Glaspur withdrew before their match against Khachanov/Lebedev, the following two women's singles third-round matches on the same court were also unfinished. Top seed Swiatek won the first set 6-0 before her opponent Osorio retired due to injury. Swiatek will face 16th seed Navarro in the fourth round, who advanced after her opponent Bouzas retired injured while trailing 6-2/1-0, marking Navarro’s first appearance in the China Open women’s singles last 16.

Fourth seed Andreyeva cruised to a 6-4/6-1 victory over Spain’s Bosas Manero, securing her 40th win of the season. She will face British player Qatar in the fourth round, who beat Australian player Jont 6-3/6-2 and reached the WTA 1000 round of 16 for the second time in her career (previously at Indian Wells this year).

In men’s singles, top seed Sinner saved a match point on his opponent Marosan’s serve in the second set and won 6-1/7-5, marking his 40th victory of the season and third consecutive year reaching the China Open semifinals. He will face third seed Deminal, who advanced after his opponent Menshik retired due to injury while trailing 4-1 in the first set.

Sinner and Deminal have met ten times previously, all victories for the Italian. Looking ahead to this match, Sinner said in a post-match interview: “It’s another challenge; he (Deminal) will definitely come back stronger, so I need to be ready. He has made great progress over the past three to four months and has had an excellent year overall. It will certainly be a tough match. I need to stay confident but also respect every opponent. Let’s wait and see.”

Lerner Chen

Nineteen-year-old American rising star Lerner Chen was leading 4-6/6-3/3-0 when his opponent Musetti retired due to injury. Lerner Chen’s semifinal opponent will be decided between Medvedev and Zverev, with that match scheduled as the final event tonight on Diamond Court.

September 30th Schedule

According to the schedule, tomorrow will feature the men’s singles semifinals and the women’s singles fourth round matches. Defending champion Gauff will open play on Diamond Court against 15th seed Bencic, followed by two men’s singles semifinals. The matches Anisimova vs Muchova and Paolini vs Buzkova will be contested in the evening session on Diamond Court.
