In just three minutes daily, stay updated on global tennis news. Hello tennis fans, today is Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Wishing all tennis friends a happy National Day! Welcome to the Tennis Home news midday report.

Last night Beijing time, the ATP 500 China Open wrapped up the men's singles semifinals. The top seed and world No. 2, Sinner, dropped the second set but still defeated the Australian rising star Deminal 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, reaching the final for the third consecutive year. This match marked Sinner’s 11th straight win over Deminal, solidifying his complete dominance against the young Australian player.

In another match, Russian star Medvedev suffered a left leg cramp in the deciding set against American rising star Liner Chen, barely able to move. Ultimately, he retired while trailing 7-5, 5-7, 0-4, granting his opponent a first-ever tour final appearance.

When Medvedev first started cramping, he tried to delay the match to let the pain subside, but the chair umpire penalized him with a sportsmanship warning for "not trying his best." Known for his assertiveness, Medvedev strongly criticized the umpire and even sought a discussion with the referee supervisor. Afterwards, the ATP officially issued a rare statement declaring the umpire’s call a mistake and revoked Medvedev’s penalty.

In men's doubles, the Russian duo Kachanov and Rublev defeated Bonzi and Griekspoor 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals to advance to the final.

At the ATP 500 Tokyo event, top seed and world No. 1 Alcaraz, despite missing a match point on his serve, still defeated second seed and American Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to claim his eighth title of the season and the 24th of his career.

A bit disappointing for Chinese fans, after winning the title, Alcaraz announced on social media that he will withdraw from the upcoming ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters. He said, "I am very disappointed to announce that I won’t be able to participate in this year’s Shanghai Masters. Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with some physical issues recently, and after discussing with my team, we decided that the best option is to rest and recover." "I was really looking forward to playing in front of the incredible Shanghai fans, and I hope to return to the court soon and see the Chinese fans again next year."

After posting the tweet, Alcaraz also recorded a video to apologize to the Chinese fans who were looking forward to his arrival.

Turning to the women’s event: last night Beijing time, the WTA 1000 China Open completed the fourth round in the bottom half of the singles draw. Defending champion and second seed Gauff came back from behind to beat 15th seed Bencic 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, achieving her ninth consecutive win at the China Open and advancing to the quarterfinals for the third straight year. This marks her 20th career appearance in the WTA 1000 quarterfinals. Next, she will face the German beauty Lis, who reversed a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over American Kessler, reaching her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

Sixth seed, Italy’s powerhouse Paolini defeated Czech player Buzkova 6-2, 7-5, making her debut quarterfinal appearance at the China Open. She will next compete against third seed and American star Anisimova, who came back from 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to beat last year’s finalist and 13th seed Muchova, also reaching the China Open quarterfinals for the first time.

In women’s doubles, the fourth seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Ostapenko won their second-round match 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 over Aoyama and Buksa to advance to the quarterfinals. They will face Mihalikova and Nichols next. Meanwhile, the Chinese duo Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan lost 6-4, 1-6, 4-10 to seventh seeds Babos and Stefani, ending their run.

Finally, let’s play a guessing game. The image below shows a silhouette of a player in action. Without any hints, can you identify who she is?

Last time’s guess was correct. Yes, the person in the picture is the Japanese star Naomi Osaka.
