Jannik Sinner reinforced his status as a leading tennis star by decisively defeating the young Vietnamese-American prospect Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the 2025 China Open final in Beijing. After only 72 minutes on court, the world No. 2 completed an impressive campaign to capture his third ATP title of the year.
Less than a month ago, Sinner was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final, missing the chance to keep his ATP No. 1 ranking. Nevertheless, the Italian player quickly recovered and returned with strong form. The Beijing final was their first encounter, where Sinner’s extensive experience and comprehensive attacking game allowed him to overpower the 19-year-old challenger.
Sinner’s forehand, rated as high as 8.8 by ATP stats, consistently forced Tien out of his comfort zone with powerful cross-court shots. Although Tien played hard and had break chances, he couldn’t convert them against the veteran’s solid defense. This win marked Sinner’s second China Open title, following his 2023 victory. He became the third player in history, alongside Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, to win the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing multiple times.
Jannik Sinner captures his third title of the year
With his victory in Beijing, Sinner raised his total ATP titles for the season to three, having previously won the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He is also the fourth player in 2025 to win three or more titles, following Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Zverev. In his career, this is Sinner’s 21st ATP trophy.
However, the points gap to Carlos Alcaraz on the ATP Live Race to Turin leaderboard remains at 2,590. Alcaraz recently won the Japan Open but withdrew from the Shanghai Masters due to an ankle injury. This situation presents a significant opportunity for Sinner to reduce the deficit if he performs well in Shanghai next week.
Despite losing in the final, Learner Tien made a strong impression. The 19-year-old American reached his first ATP Tour final and showed great promise as a future star. Before facing Sinner, Tien defeated tough opponents such as Lorenzo Musetti and Daniil Medvedev. His outstanding performance boosted him 16 places to world No. 36 and almost secured his qualification for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah.
