Daniil Medvedev encountered difficulties once more, specifically in the 2025 China Open semifinal match against Learner Tien.
Daniil Medvedev will not face penalties after receiving a controversial warning for "lack of effort" in the 2025 China Open semifinal against the young talent Learner Tien. This decision was made by the ATP after reviewing the incident and acknowledging that the chair umpire Adel Nour made an error.
The incident occurred at the start of the final set when Medvedev suffered a severe cramp. He was nearly immobile and remained still during a serve, trying to manage the pain to continue playing. However, umpire Nour interpreted this as a sign of lack of effort and issued a warning—which could have resulted in a fine of up to $40,000 at ATP 500 events.
Medvedev immediately protested, requesting intervention from the tournament supervisors and insisting he had given his all despite his physical limitations.
After review, the ATP determined that the umpire misapplied the rules. The governing body clarified that the regulation is intended to address deliberate abandonment or match sabotage, which did not apply to Medvedev’s situation.
The ATP promptly contacted the Russian player and his team after the match to ensure he would not face any penalties. This is a rare instance where the ATP publicly defended Medvedev, who has previously been penalized multiple times for temper issues at major tournaments.
The incident sparked debate about balancing disciplinary enforcement with respecting athletes’ physical limits. Medvedev had been leading 7-5, 5-3 and had a chance to serve out the match but allowed the young opponent to come back in the second set. In the final set, he was nearly exhausted, winning only a few points in the first four games before being forced to retire.
Learner Tien then advanced to his first ATP Tour final but was unable to upset the much stronger Jannik Sinner.
