Day Two of the 2025 Shanghai Rolex Masters: Shang Juncheng and Bu Win First Matches, Wu Yibing Withdraws Due to Injury, Zhou Yi Narrowly Defeated

On October 2, 2025, Beijing time, the second day of the main draw at the Shanghai Rolex Masters unfolded, with all first-round men’s singles matches completed except for the contest between Lenar Chan and Kacmanovic. Since Lenar Chan reached the final of the ATP 500 in Beijing (losing to Sinner), his first-round match was postponed to tomorrow.

Wu Yibing

In the opening match on the center court, Wu Yibing retired due to injury when trailing 5-7 in the first set against Svrčina. Earlier, he had reached the semifinals at the ATP 250 Hangzhou event by defeating former world No. 1 Medvedev but later withdrew from the ATP 500 in Beijing due to physical issues. Speaking after his retirement, he said: “My opponent dropped a short ball, and when I tried to chase it, I suddenly felt a strain. After that, my movement was clearly limited. Shanghai is the highest-level men’s tournament in our country, and if I could have continued, I definitely wouldn’t have retired. But the pain was too intense. In the last game, as everyone saw, my opponent was hitting open shots, and I couldn’t move. It was a helpless decision to retire. I’m also frustrated to present this outcome to everyone. I hope to improve and reduce such situations in the future.”

Zhou Yi

Playing on Court 2, Chinese player Zhou Yi, despite leading by a set, was overturned by Dutch player De Jong, currently ranked No. 81 in the world. After a grueling 2 hours and 44 minutes, Zhou Yi narrowly lost in a deciding set tiebreak, with a final score of 7-6(1)/2-6/6-7(3), ending his run in the first round.

Shang Juncheng

Making his night appearance on center court, Chinese player Shang Juncheng battled through three sets to defeat American qualifier Kovacevic 6-4/3-6/6-3. This marks his second consecutive year reaching the tournament’s second round and his fifth career victory at Masters events. Next, Shang will face the 9th seed Khachanov in the second round.

In a post-match interview, Shang Juncheng said he was very disappointed after losing in the first round in Beijing but quickly adjusted his mindset and was rewarded in Shanghai: “Overall, I feel the training and preparation these past weeks have been very positive. My mentality is good because losing in Beijing was really tough — I hadn’t won a first-round match there for three consecutive years, and in doubles, I came close too. So coming to Shanghai, I lacked some confidence. But my team and I worked very hard and prepared seriously for this match, so effort does pay off. Today my serving was excellent, and my baseline, forehand, backhand, and movement were all smooth. Overall, there were no big weaknesses.”

Looking ahead to the second-round match against world No. 10 Khachanov, Shang Juncheng said: “He is a nearly 2-meter tall, very well-rounded player with strong movement and currently a very stable top-10 player. We have trained together and I’ve experienced his style, so there may be some weaknesses I can exploit, such as his lack of agility compared to me. Of course, his power is immense, so he will definitely use his strengths against my weaknesses. The most important thing is to have the right attitude, enjoy the match, and believe I can play very well.”

Buvinčak

Closing the day’s action, Buvinčak also earned a strong start, spending 2 hours and 52 minutes to overcome Argentine player J. Cerundolo 6-3/6-7(5)/6-3. This victory marks his first win of the Chinese season and the fifth Masters win of his career. He will face the 26th seed Darderi in the second round. Among the five Chinese players competing in the Shanghai Rolex Masters main draw, Shang Juncheng and Buvinčak both advanced past the first round successfully.

Tabillo

This year’s Chengdu champion Tabillo defeated American player Jilong in straight sets 6-4/6-3. Having qualified through the preliminary rounds, he will face 12th seed Aliassime in round two. Similarly, qualifier and this year’s Hangzhou runner-up Rway defeated Argentine player Navone in a comeback win 3-6/6-4/6-4 and will challenge 3rd seed Zverev in the next round.
