Novak Djokovic encountered a more challenging battle than anticipated against his well-known rival Marin Cilic at the Shanghai Masters 2025.
After nearly a month off following his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open semifinals, Novak Djokovic made a strong comeback. His opening match at the Shanghai Masters 2025 saw the former world No.1 overcome Marin Cilic with his usual resilience, successfully defending four break points at crucial moments and capitalizing on his only chance in the second set.
This match was historic as both players are aged 38 (Djokovic) and 37 (Cilic), making it the oldest combined age pairing in Masters 1000 history. After the match, Djokovic cheerfully told Cilic: "We’re getting old", a tribute to their friendship and endurance after more than two decades at the top level of tennis.
The first set was intense, leading both players into a tie-break. Despite losing the first point on his serve, Djokovic quickly regained control with three mini-breaks and won 7-6 after 67 minutes. His composure and decisive serves helped him overcome an equally experienced opponent.
In the second set, the turning point came in the third game when Cilic made a forehand error, giving Djokovic a break opportunity. The Serbian player seized the advantage, held his service games firmly, and closed the match 6-4 after saving two break points in the final game with powerful serves.
Cilic made an impression with 28 winners but also committed 24 unforced errors, missing a key break chance at the end of the first set. Djokovic recorded 21 winners and only 15 unforced errors, demonstrating the composure of a four-time Shanghai Masters champion.
In the second round, Nole will face Yannick Hanfmann, who caused an upset by defeating the 25th seed Frances Tiafoe in the opening match.
