In the final match of the second round at the Shanghai Masters, 20-year-old Chinese playerShang Junchengbeat 9th seed Khachanov 7-6(3), 6-3, advancing to the third round of an ATP 1000 Masters event for the first time.
In the second round, all 32 seeded players took the court, each matched against a first-round winner. After two days of competition, the seeds’ performance was disappointing, with eight seeds losing and exiting early. Additionally, top seed Alcaraz and 24th seed Tsitsipas withdrew before their matches.

Top seed Alcaraz withdrew before the tournament started.
Seeds ranked 2 to 5 — Sinner, Zverev, Djokovic, and Fritz — defeated Altmaier, Rojer-Cilic, Mao Roran, and advanced smoothly to the third round.
Second seed Sinner showed signs of fatigue and was not as effortless as usual, having just won the Beijing title with five consecutive wins, needing some recovery.
Third seed Zverev injured his toe in the final game; hopefully, this will not affect his upcoming matches.
Fourth seed Djokovic played comfortably against an old rival, though the win was not easy.
Fifth seed Fritz narrowly defeated Mao Roran 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(1),
while sixth seed Shelton, returning after a US Open injury, was upset by Belgian veteran Goffin 6-2, 6-4, indicating his recovery is not yet ideal.
Seventh seed De Minaur beat Carabelli and advanced smoothly.
Eighth seed Musetti defeated Komeisana and also moved on to the next round.

As mentioned earlier, 9th seed Khachanov lost to Shang Juncheng. Eleventh seed Ruud and 13th seed Rublev were defeated by Berrettini and Yoshihito Nishioka respectively, ending their Shanghai campaigns. Fourteenth seed Bublik lost to Monaco’s Valentin Vassallo, who is the cousin of French player Lindgrenessi.
Tenth seed Rune, 12th seed Aliassime, along with 15th seed Lehecka and 16th seed Medvedev, all advanced to the third round successfully.
Clearly, seeds ranked 9 to 16 suffered heavy losses, with half eliminated after their first matches.
Seventeenth seed Menzik was knocked out by De Jong.
Twenty-fourth seed Tsitsipas withdrew before his match.
Twenty-fifth seed Tiafoe lost to Huffman.
Twenty-eighth seed Michelson was defeated by Lindgrenessi.
Twenty-ninth seed Nakajima exited after losing to Mehzac.
Sinner (2) faces Taren (27), with a head-to-head record of 0-6.
Zverev (3) goes against Lindgrenessi, head-to-head 0-1. At this year’s Wimbledon first round, Zverev lost 2-3 to Lindgrenessi. Hopefully, Zverev can get revenge in Shanghai.
Djokovic (4) meets Huffman (Q), head-to-head 0-1.
Fritz (5) plays Pericard (32), head-to-head 1-0.
De Minaur (7) faces Markzak, head-to-head 1-0.
Musetti (8) competes against Darderi (26), head-to-head 1-0. This is an all-Italian derby.
Additionally, Shang Juncheng is the only Chinese player to reach the third round, where he will face Portuguese player Borges. They will meet for the first time, with Borges currently ranked 51st.
