Shanghai Masters Update: Djokovic Advances, Sinner Withdraws, Fritz Eliminated

Yesterday’s third round in the bottom half witnessed a series of retirements, possibly due to Shanghai’s unusually hot weather. Such high temperatures are rarely seen in Shanghai in October.

Fourth seed Djokovic and tenth seed Rune secured victories on Sunday, whereas defending champion Sinner retired in the final set against Tallon Griekspoor. Fifth seed Fritz also succumbed after nearly running out of energy.

Here are the Sunday results from the Shanghai Masters:

Tenth seed Rune defeated 21st seed Ugo Humbert with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Rune experienced a brief spell of discomfort during the match, which took place during the hottest part of the day.

Thirty-second seed Pericard beat fifth seed Fritz 6-4, 7-5. Fritz clearly struggled more with the afternoon heat.

Fourth seed Djokovic overcame qualifier Huffman 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Huffman played impressively, having won two qualifying matches against Sonego and 25th seed Tiafoe, both going to three sets.

Twenty-seventh seed Tallon defeated second seed Sinner 6-7(3), 7-5, 3-2 (Sinner retired). Sinner showed signs of fatigue in the previous round. This was the last match on Sunday, played during the coolest time. Unfortunately, Sinner had a thigh cramp and had to retire.

Thirty-first seed Diallo defeated David Goffin 3-0 (Goffin retired) in just three games.

Bergs defeated 19th seed Cerundolo 7-6(1), 6-3. It was expected that the Argentine player would handle the heat better, but the Belgian player kept charging through the high temperatures, beating Korda, Ruud, and Cerundolo consecutively, achieving his best ATP1000 Masters result by reaching the round of 16.

Munàr defeated qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

Qualifier Vacherot defeated 20th seed Machac 6-0, 3-1 (Machac retired).

Counting the third round in the bottom half, three players retired mid-match: Sinner, Goffin, and Machac.

Bottom half fourth round draw:

Diallo (31) vs. Bergs, head-to-head 2-0.

Djokovic (4) vs. Munàr, head-to-head 1-0.

Rune (10) vs. Pericard (32), head-to-head 1-1.

Tallon (27) vs. Vacherot, first meeting.

The weather forecast predicts continued high temperatures today, reaching up to 34℃ in the afternoon. Since matches cover the entire hot period, there are concerns about the upper half’s matches today.
