A worrying image as Sinner withdraws, opponent speaks honestly about the victory

Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw due to injury during his match against Griekspoor at the Shanghai tournament.

Jannik Sinner’s attempt to defend his title at the Rolex Shanghai Masters ended Sunday night (October 5) when the Italian player had to retire in his match against Tallon Griekspoor.

Griekspoor was leading Sinner 6-7(3), 7-5, 3-2 before the world No. 2 on the PIF ATP ranking had to stop playing amid the extremely humid conditions in Shanghai. Sinner seemed to be struggling with his right thigh.

Sinner’s physical issues began to appear near the end of the second set. In the final set, the Italian player was limping and frequently rubbing his right thigh.

Jannik Sinner was forced to retire due to physical problems.

"This is definitely not the way you want to win," Griekspoor said. "The conditions in Shanghai have been harsh all week. I think we were somewhat lucky to play in the evening without sun, but after 2 hours and 36 minutes, in the middle of the third set... I feel sorry for Sinner and wish him a quick recovery," Griekspoor continued.
