Medvedev praises and compares the Vietnamese-American player to Sinner and Alcaraz

Having been defeated twice by Learner Tien in 2025, Daniil Medvedev at last celebrated a win against the young player in the round of 16 at the 2025 Shanghai Masters.

Learner Tien, the young Vietnamese-American player, received praise from Daniil Medvedev following their round of 16 match at the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters on the evening of October 8, Hanoi time.

"In my opinion, Learner Tien is an extremely impressive player. He may lack a strong serve — the most crucial aspect in modern tennis — yet he plays excellent tennis at just 19 years old. He is still very young and has plenty of time to improve; he has a very bright future ahead.", Medvedev shared."You never know what will happen; tennis is a demanding sport. But I’m very happy to have beaten Learner because, aside from the 'Big 3,' Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, he is probably the toughest opponent I’ve faced. I believe he could become world number one someday."

Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien delivered one of the best matches of 2025 together.

Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien competed in an exciting and dramatic round of 16 match at this year’s Shanghai Masters. Medvedev took the lead 1-0 after winning the first set in a tie-break, then quickly secured a break point early in the second set and seemed poised for an easy win.

However, Learner Tien made a strong comeback, leveling the score amid Medvedev’s confusion. The Russian player then suffered cramps, lost the second set tie-break easily, and many believed Medvedev would withdraw as he did in their previous encounter a week ago in Beijing.

Yet, in the third set, Medvedev unexpectedly regained his best form — which caused Learner Tien to doubt himself and gradually make mistakes. The mindset of "I can’t lose to an injured opponent, just try to keep the ball in play" seemed to weigh heavily on the Vietnamese-American player, who lost a critical break point in the key service game and ultimately suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat (7-6; 6-7; 4-6) after nearly three hours of play.

Daniil Medvedev earned his first victory against Learner Tien.

After two losses to Tien in 2025 at the Australian Open second round and the China Open semifinal, Medvedev finally tasted success against the 19-year-old player.

"Learner forces you to play in a certain way, always making you hit longer rallies and run more. When you approach the net and feel the point is yours, he will deliver a shot beyond your reach. Even when you’re up 30-0, he keeps fighting until the end.

In some way, I like that. I hate facing Learner, but I admire how he battles on the court.", the former world number one from Russia confessed.

The win over Learner Tien advanced Daniil Medvedev to the quarterfinals of this year’s Shanghai Masters, where he will face another counterpunch specialist, Alex De Minaur.
