Novak Djokovic continues his impressive run at the 2025 Shanghai Masters by securing a spot in the semifinals with a convincing 6-3, 7-5 victory over Zizou Bergs.
The former world No. 1 is now just two wins away from claiming his fifth title in China. Despite dealing with some physical issues, the Serbian star has maintained steady form and will face the “phenomenon” Valentin Vacherot in the upcoming semifinal.
After the match, when asked if the win was “easy,” Djokovic quickly denied this and showed respect for his opponent:
“It might look like that, but I assure you today was far from easy. At this level, no victory comes without a fight. Zizou Bergs played excellent tennis throughout the tournament. I think it would be disrespectful to call this an easy win.”, he shared.
Djokovic also revealed that he is still managing some physical challenges, although the situation has improved: “My leg felt okay today. Almost every match I have to deal with some kind of physical issue, but I hope things get better as the tournament progresses. I have a day off before the semifinal, which is very positive. I will return with the mindset and determination to win,” Djokovic affirmed.
When asked what still moves him after winning dozens of major titles, the 24-time Grand Slam champion mentioned the Wimbledon Centre Court: “Stepping onto Centre Court at Wimbledon is an unmatched feeling. It’s a dream for most players, and I’m very fortunate to have lifted the trophy there multiple times,” he said.
By reaching the semifinals, Djokovic has made it to the top 4 in 10 out of his 11 appearances at the Shanghai Masters, a record unmatched by anyone. The Serbian player also expressed gratitude to the Chinese fans: “I always enjoy playing in China. The crowd’s support makes me feel comfortable and energized. When I’m down, they help lift me up,” Djokovic shared.
He admitted that maintaining fitness and energy has been a big challenge this week, but the enthusiasm from the stands helped him push through: “Whenever I get the chance, I hear the cheers, and that gives me strength. Despite the aches and pains, I cherish every moment on this court in front of this audience,” Djokovic said emotionally.
