Djokovic: The Humble King

Last night, Djokovic defeated the tenacious Belgian rising star Zizou Bergs 6-3, 7-5 in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, reaching the tournament semifinals for the tenth time in his career. However, more moving than this seemingly straightforward victory was Djokovic’s humility, resilience, and profound love for tennis displayed in the post-match interview.

When asked how it felt to be just two wins away from the title, Djokovic immediately corrected any notion that the matches were easy. “It may look easy to you, but I assure you, it’s not,” he said solemnly. “If anyone thinks this match was easy, I believe that would be disrespectful to him (Bergs).” These words not only acknowledge Bergs’ excellent performance but also reveal a champion’s deep understanding of tennis: every victory is hard-fought, and every honor is earned through sweat and determination.

Although he admitted that “the legs are fine,” his physical condition was not perfect: “Almost every match, there are always some issues with the body,” Djokovic still chose to overcome challenges with focus and perseverance. For him, the rest day before the semifinals is a precious chance to recover, and he promised to “return with the right mindset and the determination to win.” This spirit of facing difficulties head-on and never giving up has been the foundation of his two-decade-long tennis career.

Even after winning 24 Grand Slam titles and achieving the career Grand Slam, Djokovic still holds a childlike wonder for the tennis world. When asked if there’s anything in the sport that still amazes him, his eyes lit up instantly. “That has to be the Wimbledon Centre Court,” he replied with a smile. “Stepping onto that court feels unlike any other.”

He passionately described the details of Wimbledon: the path from the locker room to the Centre Court, the photos and trophies lining the hall of history, and the unique elegance and professionalism. “It really gives me goosebumps,” he admitted. Yet Djokovic’s gratitude is not limited to the distant English grass courts. He especially mentioned the support he receives from Chinese fans: “Every time I step onto the central court in China, I get so much support. I didn’t expect such a passionate atmosphere.” Since 2010, Djokovic has worn red in Shanghai for the tenth consecutive time:“Of course, I do it intentionally; I wear red to honor Chinese culture and tradition.” From Wimbledon to Shanghai, his passion for tennis and appreciation for fans transcend geographical and cultural boundaries.

The Shanghai Masters has become a lucky venue for Djokovic; this is his 11th appearance and 10th semifinal. After signing autographs, he carefully wrote the Chinese character for “fortune.” When talking about his impressive record here, he unhesitatingly credited the Chinese fans: “I enjoy playing in China. The support from the crowd definitely makes you feel comfortable and gives you strength. When you’re down on the court, they lift you up.”

Although he recently admitted to struggling somewhat with his energy levels in matches, Djokovic emphasized that the crowd’s cheers and energy keep him moving forward. “Even when I’m having a tough time on court, I really enjoy playing in front of them,” he said. This deep emotional bond with the fans not only contributes to his outstanding record in Shanghai but also makes this court another “spiritual home” in his tennis journey.

From humble reflections after hard-fought wins, to heartfelt memories of Wimbledon, and sincere gratitude toward Chinese fans, Djokovic’s night in Shanghai revealed multiple facets of a great champion: he is both a relentless competitor on court and an eternal pilgrim of tennis. As he said, “No victory is easy,” but it is this clear-eyed acceptance of challenges and unwavering love for tennis that drive him to continually surpass himself and write his legend.

In his quest at the Shanghai Masters, Djokovic fights not only for the title but also for every bit of support, every challenge, and every moment of pure passion for tennis. His journey in Shanghai is far from over; he will sweat every last drop to claim his 41st Masters crown.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Mei)
