Former ATP star speaks frankly about Alcaraz and Sinner compared to the legendary trio Djokovic, Nadal, Federer

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have swept nearly all major tennis titles recently and are regarded as the successors to the legendary trio Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic, but a former ATP star has just given a surprising assessment

Jerzy Janowicz compares Alcaraz and Sinner with the trio Nadal, Federer, Djokovic

Former ATP player Jerzy Janowicz believes Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner do not bring as much excitement to fans as the golden generation of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

Janowicz played professionally from 2007 to 2022 and reached a career-high world ranking of No. 14 in August 2013. His biggest achievements include reaching the final of the 2012 Paris Masters and the semifinals of Wimbledon 2013, milestones that made him one of the most notable faces in European tennis during the early 2010s.

During his career, Janowicz faced the three tennis legends Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer multiple times. Although he never won any matches against the "Big Three" (losing 0-2 to Nadal, 0-1 to Djokovic, and 0-1 to Federer), he managed five victories over top 10 players. The most memorable win was when Janowicz defeated Andy Murray at the 2012 Paris Masters – a match considered a turning point in the Polish player’s career.

The trio Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer still hold the top three spots in the list of male players with the most Grand Slam titles ever, with 24, 22, and 20 titles respectively. Therefore, when comparing the "Big Three" era to the current young generation including Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Janowicz cannot hide his nostalgia.

"I really miss the competition among Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. Also Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and David Ferrer," Janowicz shared at a Padel Cup event held in Turin. "Today, tennis seems more boring. Everyone plays alike, with no clear differences. Maybe I’m a bit nostalgic, but the old generation was truly much more fascinating – more interesting than both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, though they are very strong."

Carlos Alcaraz, currently world No. 1, has six Grand Slam titles, while Jannik Sinner – ranked No. 2 – has four. Both are dominating men’s tennis by sharing four of the last eight Grand Slam titles. However, according to Janowicz, they still cannot deliver the intense emotions and drama that the contests between Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer once thrilled millions of fans with.

Interestingly, Janowicz himself had quite sharp remarks about Djokovic and Federer during his playing days. In 2013, he told Tennis World USA: "I hate pretentiousness. I’m always myself, I don’t imitate anyone or act a role. Emotions guide me – when I’m angry, I show it. I have no idols. I used to like Pete Sampras’s style and Marat Safin’s personality."

He even openly criticized the two greatest legends of the era: "Djokovic is fake, he just likes to show off and act. Federer is arrogant, there’s something unnatural about him that makes it hard for others to feel close."

However, it seems that after retiring and moving to Padel, Janowicz has changed his view. His nostalgic words for the "Big Three" show he genuinely values and misses the golden era created by Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer – a period many regard as an unprecedented peak in modern tennis history.
