Kyrgios leaves open the possibility of retirement: 'My body can no longer take it'

Nick Kyrgios continues to struggle with his physical condition and only competed in a few matches in 2025.

Australian player Nick Kyrgios, known for his talent and controversies, has confirmed he will participate in the 2026 Australian Open—the first Grand Slam of the year—"in some way," while admitting that his career is gradually coming to an end due to persistent injuries.

At 30 years old, Kyrgios had to miss almost the entire 2025 season because of injury, only managing to play in four tournaments: Brisbane, Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami, with a modest record of 1 win and 4 losses. Once regarded as one of the most gifted players of his generation, Kyrgios now struggles with his physical health and multiple surgeries on his knee and wrist.

This week, the Australian appeared at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) in Hong Kong, but no longer as a player. Instead, he tried his hand as a commentator and coach for veteran player Richard Gasquet.

"I really enjoy this role. Gasquet is a legend, and it’s an honor to work alongside him.", Kyrgios said after "Little Mozart" was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Shang Juncheng.

Although interested in his new role, Kyrgios still leaves open the possibility of returning to the court. In an interview with the Unscriptdprogram, the former world No. 13 revealed that he still trains daily and is preparing for a few events at the end of the year, including exhibition matches in the US and Dubai, where he might face stars like Aryna Sabalenka or Naomi Osaka.

However, Kyrgios candidly admitted that retirement is only a matter of time: "I know my career is winding down. I can’t keep having surgeries and then taking 6 to 9 months off. My body just can’t handle it anymore."

Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final in 2022 and won the Australian Open men’s doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis that same year. After nearly two years mostly sidelined by injury, he said his biggest goal now is to end his career on his own terms—ideally in front of his home crowd in Melbourne.

"I might participate in the 2026 Australian Open in some capacity. I’m not sure which event I’ll play, but I definitely want to say goodbye there.", Kyrgios affirmed.
