The tennis legend reveals a surprising truth about Jannik Sinner

The tennis legend, a multiple Grand Slam champion, recently revealed a surprising fact about Jannik Sinner, the player who just regained the world No. 1 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz.

Tennis legend Boris Becker reveals the truth about Jannik Sinner

German tennis legend Boris Becker recently disclosed that he almost became the coach of Jannik Sinner—the player who has just returned to the world No. 1 spot. Furthermore, Becker revealed that he was the one who advised Sinner to collaborate with Darren Cahill—a decision that later led to great success for the young Italian player.

In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the six-time Grand Slam champion said he had never "publicly acknowledged" the potential connection between himself and Sinner before, but this time confirmed that those rumors were entirely true.

When asked why the partnership did not materialize, Becker explained: "Two months later, while I was waiting for a ruling in London, I told Jannik that I didn’t know how things would end, so I couldn’t make a commitment. But I didn’t want to leave him uncertain, so I suggested a few names—including Darren Cahill. To me, he is the best."

Cahill, 60 years old, is currently working alongside Sinner, but his future with the coaching team remains uncertain. Earlier this year in January, Cahill announced he would leave Sinner’s team after the season ended. However, everything changed when Sinner won Wimbledon. At that time, he half-jokingly said he had "made a bet" with Cahill: if he won, he had the right to ask the Australian coach to stay for a longer period.

In reality, Cahill continued to be part of Sinner’s team during late-season tournaments such as Vienna, Paris, and the ATP Finals in Turin. Sinner revealed that afterward, he planned to have a serious conversation with Cahill, hoping to convince him to stay. If Cahill decided to leave, Sinner would need to find a new partner to work alongside coach Simone Vagnozzi—who has been with him since the early days. However, Becker strongly asserted: "Darren will not be leaving."

Looking back, Becker said he had complete faith in Sinner’s potential: "From the very beginning, I believed Jannik could become world number one. He only needed to improve his serve and movement, while mentally, he was already ahead of most players his age."

Still, Becker mentioned that he is now "at a different phase of life": "My family is growing, I have new business ventures. I no longer want to travel constantly, and perhaps the coaching role has become too restrictive for me."

Although he almost collaborated with Sinner, Becker confirmed that the Italian player made the perfect choice by selecting the two most suitable coaches. He added: "Winning four Grand Slams by age 24—I don’t think I could have done better than Cahill and Vagnozzi.

Simone may not have been well-known when first chosen, but very few understand the game as deeply as he does. The success of ‘Team Sinner’ speaks volumes. It’s truly remarkable, especially considering Jannik only started playing tennis seriously at 13 or 14 years old."
